Open Messenger URL in avant browser as well as hotmail box

Post by dreamerboy » Tue Dec 21, 2004 3:18 pm

Hey everyone
First im sorry if it has been discussed before but i did search on the request forum and didnt find any topic :)

So... once again, i wanted to tried firefox browser... okay it's really nice but for some points i cant leave AB !
AB is REALLY a tab browser, it NEVER opens a new window in a separate process.... where firefox does it... my friend told me that its maybe because firefox execute point to point the code and when the code on a page says "open new window" firefox does it but what'st h point of having tabs AND multi windows?
Anyway.... the biggest advantage so far for firefox (except the security issues thanks to not using IE base) is teh fact that it catch the URL typed in MSN Messenger....
Why cant Avant Browser do the same?
Its really annoying that IE opens all the time.
I dont know if im the only one thinking that but could you pliz do something?
Maybe it is just a registry key to change?

And also, if possible but its less annoying :
If it is possible, also catch with avant browser the mailbox link into msn messenger main window.
For that, its maybe not necessary to do something in AB because i found a way to do it with firefox : install msn plus (which i always use anyway) + a plugin that force the use of the default browser to open hotmail link.
Anyway, thanks for reading and for help

MSN Messenger is hard-wired to IE--see FAQ's here:

viewtopic.php?t=616 (scroll down to third from bottom)

It's been suggested to switch to something like Trilliam.

It's not hard wired to IE. I did some experimenting and when Avant is the default, IE opens.
Now here is the strange part. If I set Avant as default, then set Firefox as default, Avant will open Windows Messenger's links. But, if I make Avant the default again, then IE will open. I also tested this with MyIE2 and get the same results.
So, what we need to do is have Firefox as default, but somehow have Avant open all urls. Hmmm, strange behavior.

Ok, I think I have it.
Right click and save this
Now, you have to have Avant installed in the default location. If you have it installed in a different location, you will need to edit the registry hack and change the path to the avant.exe file. This will need to be done in two places in the file. I think it is self explanatory where the editing needs to be done.
I only tested this with a link and only in Windows Messenger. It should also work with MSN Messenger.
To be safe, back up your registry first.

Edit: Removed link until I figure out why it won't work with MSN Messenger but will work with Windows Messenger.

What does the hack do exactly?

If this works for people, we'll need to amend the faq...

actually, mine is a little different. Does that one in the FAQ work? I thought that way no longer worked with the newer version of Messenger.

It just adds a few entries to tell Windows to treat Avant like IE and add the features to it.

It's already in the FAQ.

FAQ
No its not. We have
IEMessenger won't open in Avant, just IE
The most recent version of Messenger can't be adjusted to open in Avant. Users have suggested Trillian as an alternative.

There is one above that FAQ. Well, that is for MSN or Outlook, but it is the same registry hack, kind of.
The only problem with the way I did it is that no matter what your default browser is, Avant will open with a Messenger link. Which is fine. You would need to remove the items that this adds if you want to get rid of having Avant opening Messenger links.

Oh yeah, I don't think that 1 works in the latest messenger. Hopefully yours will though.

If this is for MSN 7.0 when clicking the mail-button in msn to use AB instead of internet explorer.

it's not working.

Like I said above, I don't have MSN Messenger, I have Windows Messenger. Though they are different, they are very similar. I can't say it will work with MSN Messenger but I think it would.
I also didn't try with anything but a sent link. Well, that is not true, this morning, I clicked on the link to go to my inbox, but that caused my default email client to start.

Also, where is Avant installed? Those registry hacks are for the default location, you need to change them if you install Avant in a different location.

Edit: Hey babybox, where did you get 7.0? I was going to download MSN Messenger 7.0 and give it a try but I couldn't find it. I saw a 6.2 version and a beta. They didn't say on the webpage what version of the beta it was.

I do have it working in 6.2, well kind of. It will open links that are sent in Avant, but the inbox still uses IE. If you want this, PM me your email address and I will send it. This is for anyone that wants it.

Thought I'd start a new post instead of keep editing the prior one.

Ok, here is where I am. Windows Messenger is working fine. With MSN Messenger, I was able to get Avant to open with links and when clicking on the email link. With a link, Avant will open and go to the link. Now the trouble, when clicking on the inbox, Avant will open, but it won't go to the Hotmail inbox. I'm suspecting this is due to Avant and the SP2 bug. It goes to the address of http://-embedding or something like that.
I'm thinking about installing 98 just so I can test this. :D But this will be a lot of work since I will have to reinstall XP and Linux also. So, as of right now, I won't be installing 98, but I might do this in the near future.

Messenger registry hack. Download and read the Install notes.
I still can't get the inbox to open, but at least Avant will open now, then you will just have to go to your hotmail, msn account to read the mail. I was hoping some brave person with 98, ME or XP SP1, not SP2 would check this and tell me if inbox will open in Avant.

There is another way..

Messenger Plus & StuffPlug-NG will do the trick..

StuffPlug-NG has an option that will open Avant from "email inbox" in msn-messenger

Yeah, there is that way, but I hesitate to mention it because of the spyware, that is why I didn't mention it before. The actual program, apparently, doesn't have spyware, but there are other programs that come with the download that do contain spyware. So, if you do decide to go that way, be careful when installing.
