that would be helpful. it would safe time. Also there should be a online database which is automaticly updated when someone adds something to the black list.

This thread was split from thread located here so that both threads would better remain on topic

Online database's are a big no-no as alot of people would most likely see it as some form of spyware (I know it wouldn't be but, thats how it would be seen)

To be honest, I can't see many people taking the time to do that themselves

I think he might have been confused by the:

A couple of things to consider, too, would be...

1. It would have to be somewhere where someone would monitor it. If it was placed someplace like this... it would be a pain to organize or find anything in because everything would be placed chronologically and would have to be placed in indiviual posts... unless a mod would be willing to keep track of them.

2. Its usefullness:user ratio. Would all of the work going into maintaining it be worthwhile compared to how many people use it? You have to try to figure if most people use ad blocking to block those ads that show up on a lot of free sites as popups, etc... because they might get annoyed by those out there that post to the list who like to block everything they don't want to see (Like those out there that disable everything they can in Avant)

I think it's a good idea in theory, but I think it would be really hard to implement.

You would have a problem doing it on this forum as you're not a mod, though.

If you have some webspace, though, you could start the list there. Most ISPs provide their users with free webspace or you could try one of the many free ones on the net. It doesn't have to immediately be pretty.

If it's something you'd like to do, I'm sure some people here would be willing to provide advice, etc.

What is needed (below is just the basics btw, and only in my opinion);

1. ASP/PHP based CMS (Content Management System)

This really depends on personal preference and/or knowledge. My personal preference would be ASP as it's what I know.

Bear in mind however, very very few free hosts allow ASP/PHP, many of them allow HTML only, which would kill the whole idea.

2. MS Access/SQL database

Again, this depends on personal preference (I personally prefer Access but thats only because I've not used SQL as it costs too much to get it added to my hosting (approx extra £500 per year for SQL or £140 per year for MySQL))

3. Simple HTTP update

This would be tied in with #4 and would allow users to auto-add items to the database without having to go to the website.

4. File AND database compare

This would be an absolute must and would require comparing the users black list file with the online database (and this is where it becomes complex).

Hi,

It would be really cool if the AD Blacklist was stored on a central server. If everyone who uses the program banned all the ad's they encountered, everyone who opted to use the community blacklist would benefit from it.

Maybe have it download the most recent updates since the last sync every time the browser starts.

Scott

Another request for the "community ad-blocker".

This poster's topic was "Community Ad-blocker" which I though was a good name, so I've added that to the title of this thread

I don't suppose there is a way to automatically import blocked ads from an existing hosts file such as the one listed at the site below. It blocks just about every ad that is blockable, but leaves nasty red x's. If there were a way to use it as a basis for such a list, that would be highly useful and desireable.

Apperently there is:
http://home.houston.rr.com/acep38/adblack.dat
Make a backup of the existing adblack.dat file first
then save the new file to
C:\Documents and Settings\ [USERNAME] \Application Data\Avant Browser\

This will block most ads, but not all, at the cost of making web pages load around 1 seconds slower on average at least under windows 2000.

I have not fully tested this, please use at your own risk.

No, the compilation was taken from the Ad blocking hosts file here at: http://www.everythingisnt.com/hosts.html

I added a few sites of my own at the end, then converted it into a dat file to use with Avant. Mike did most of the work though.
