I am using Windows 7 32bit and default rendering engine Firefox.

When I click File/Print Preview it displays a message showing Title and Progress which stays at Preparing.. for ever.

Also how do I get Headers & Footers to print, in File/Page Setup I have set them up but they do not print.

You set it under IE rendering engine?

Do you have the same problem when using IE browser?

Headers & Footers print OK with IE9.

I also get the same issue, that Print Preview hangs on the initial screen (preparing) with Firefox rendering mode, using for example the sample web page http://www.crn.com.au/News/290879,microsoft-unveils-windows-8-logo.aspx ... (of interest, because it shows the just-announced Windows 8 logo).

In contrast IE9 does handle Print Preview correctly for this same web page. and so does Opera 11.6 too. (I don't have Chrome currently installed so couldn't test Print Preview for this. For Safari, could find Print but not Print Preview.)

Moving on to Firefox itself (version 10.0.2), I find that Print Preview also fails, so the problem is quite possibly related to a Print Preview failure in Avant Browser's underlying Firefox rendering engine rather than to the Avant front-end.

The clarifying question to ask is whether Avant's IE rendering engine also handles Print Preview properly as does IE9 proper. Are people using Avant's IE Compatible and/or IE9 Standards rendering engines having the same issue with Print Preview hanging?

I'm pretty sure Avant's settings only apply to the IE engine. In the meantime for Firefox, changing the header and footer strings in about:config works for me

Type about:config in the address bar, Enter, pass the warning screen. There's a filter bar at the top of the screen, so the easiest way to find what you need is to type print_header and wait a second for the screen to refresh. Firefox used to only have the print.print_headerleft, right, etc., but looking at it now, it seems they have an entry for each individual printer installed on your system. I'm assuming the standard ones are the default? You can use these codes:

  • &T = Title of the document
  • &U = URL
  • &D = Date/time
  • &P = Page number
  • &PT = Page of total pages

Leaving it blank will leave the items blank.

I'm not sure if that's too quick of an explanation, but if it is, let us know and I or someone else can walk you through it a little better.

Ni Hao, Jasmine!
When you mention "2012 build 23" is that for IE and/or Firefox rendering mode, and specifically what about for "pre-alpha 119" in Firefox rendering mode?

The same for pre-alpha 119. Could you re-download it?

These release numbers are rather confusing for Lao Tony!
Last week I downloaded a copy of pre-alpha 118 that actually showed as build 119(under "Help | About Avant Browser...").

Earlier today I noticed the version officially called build 119 and installed it. Then I saw your comment just above, and being uncertain if it was a newer version of "build 119" I re-downloaded it and installed 119 again just in case there was any difference (was there?).

I just downloaded and it's still hanging at the prepared dialog

Same for me too. Now I'm getting confused -- which is getting to be a constant state for me -- about whether pre-alpha build 119 is supposed to have fixed the "grey pages" problem or the "print preview hang" problem, or both of them.

Oh sorry, I am old. I made a mistake. Pre-alpha 119 will be upgraded soon. Maybe tomorrow with latest fixes and newest gecko engine 10.0.2.

Xie xie. I look forward to it, Jasmine.
I hope that it still isn't called "build 119" (which is already released at viewtopic.php?f=36&t=31041) but rather "build 120" or whatever, to avoid further confusion.

I'm confirming that this fixes the "Print Preview hang" problem, Jasmine.

However, in Firefox 10.0.2 -- I mean Firefox proper, not Avant's Firefox rendering mode -- when I select Print Preview nothing seems to happen at all, not even the "Preparing... dialog that Avant displays.

So I have a request for the kind members of this Avant forum:
Would the changes made to get Print Preview work in in Avant beta 121 also be applicable to fix the same problem in Firefox? If so, or even just to provide a clue how to fix it in Firefox, would you please indicate what changes were made in beta 121 to resolve the problem and/or what to look for and do in Firefox that might resolve the issue? [-o< Thanks in anticipation...

Isn't 121 using FF 11 beta? Maybe FF 11 has the fix.
