"pointer flash"

Orca bug reports go here, and only here. Note that Orca is no longer in development, and no new builds or versions of Orca are planned.

"pointer flash"

Post by Darklord » Thu Jul 02, 2009 8:22 pm

(can't come up with a decent title, sorry.)

anyways...

anyone else experience this? sometimes, not very often, the pointer will suddenly shift rapidly between the arrow and the "link-hand", and I'm unable to activate anything in orca anymore. mouse gestures don't work, buttons don't work, it's impossible to activate links or go back in browser history - even alt-f4 doesn't work. I have to move the pointer outside the orca window - in this case, to call up task manager and shut down orca from there (it was at 97-99% cpu - I'm afraid I didn't get to check if it was "not responding" in the applications pane).

it's happened a few times now, and I'm unsure whether it's something to do with my system or if it's a genuine orca bug.

This exact problem has happened to me before, but I cannot replicate it as it does not happen often (and many times, a page that triggered it once before works completely fine afterwards). It is exactly as you described: the pointer and the hyperlink cursor switch back and forth extremely fast, Orca shoots up to 99-100% CPU, and must be closed via kill process.

Most recently, it has happened on this website: http://www.overniteexpress.com/aboutoe.asp
Try hovering the mouse over "Click here to learn more" (results will vary, but this is the most recent site where I encountered the problem)

I am now able to replicate it about 80% of the time on that site. Try approaching the hyperlink from the top, where the text is. Then slowly move the cursor down to the link. As soon as it hits the border of the hyperlinked text, the problem manifests itself. Here's the HTML for that section of the page:

Code: Select all

 <font size="2" face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"> <a href="aboutoemore.asp"><font face="Arial" size="-2" color="Blue">Click Here to Learn More</font></a>..</font></div>
Not quite sure why there are two font-size tags... could that be causing issues?

I can confirm that this happens with Orca (regularly) - but I have also been able to confirm it with Firefox (less frequently). We really need other examples of this bug to find out exactly what causes it...

BTW - when "locked-up" I pressed CTRL+W a couple of times and about 10-15 seconds later Orca processed the keypresses and closed the current tab.

 It's happened to me too- I thought it was a bug and it happens on MySpace all the time. I'm new to Orca (I got it a day ago) and already that has angered me to the point of not using it. But I will try what the bottom post says and see if it helps-hopefully this will be fixed as I thought it looked like a great browser.

Have you tried Orca 1.2 build 1? I tested in this release that the flicker problem on this site http://www.overniteexpress.com/aboutoe.asp was gone. If it still happens in other sites please show us some examples.

For the problems hard to replay, could you add me into your MSN or Skype list if you use either of them? The advantage is that you can let us know the situation in the first place by making some screenshots, sharing your screen or explaining the specific problems more clearly when they happen.

Kudos, could you provide more details about how to catch the problem? I only replayed it prior to v1.2.1 on this site http://www.overniteexpress.com/aboutoe.asp.

I found this page http://www.nat32.com/indext.htm frequently refreshed itself in Orca. Is it a bug?

On that page I experience either the "pointer flash" near the bottom of the screen or the "whole page flash/refresh". They both seem to be variants of the same problem. Works fine with all other browsers that I tested - so yes, I guess that it is an Orca bug.

Kudos, could you provide some other sites for testing? Same problem happens in firefox 3.5 as well. Anderson checked the site isn't W3C compliant.

If I find more then I shall report back here - but it's odd that Firefox 3.5 works correctly for me.

Since the upgrade to the 3.5 engine, I have not experienced the "pointer flash" issue yet, but loading the nat32.com page does tend to trigger the page refresh bug. The overniteexpress.com site, which almost always caused the pointer bug, seems to be working fine now

I have no clue what you people are talking about, but I have a suspicion it could be similar to my own problem. About every webpage I view nomatter where (maybe) the cursor rapidly switches from normal (default) cursor to double arrows (re-size horizontally). This doesn't happen on any other browsers. It doesn't seem to effect the functionality or anything. Just realllllly anoiiiiyyying.

The original "pointer flash" issue was address a few builds back. Can you provide more details of your problem, with specific URL's for us to check.

It mostly seems to happen when I click, but it also happens when I move. This only seems to happen in restored windows. (Not maximized)

Bad quality, but hopefully you get the point. Couldn't get avi to upload correctly. The weird square thing isn't there, the cursor just changes to the re-size cursor.

It happens on all pages.

Thanks for the video - but unfortunately I cannot replicate the issue.

Let's try resetting Orca back to default settings:
Close Orca then type the following into a command prompt (including quotes):

Code: Select all

ren "%appdata%\Orca Profiles\" "Orca Backup %DATE:/=% %TIME::=%"
This will backup/rename your settings folder with the current date and time.
Then try running Orca again.

Ok, I did what you said, and it has all the defaults now, but it still happens. D:

It seems it only happens if I touch the edge of the window (where I can resize it). So, if I maximize it, this will not happen until I touch the edge. The resize cursor it flashes to is whatever cursor it last showed when I touched the edge. (If I hover over resize for bottom it flashes the vertical-resize cursor)
