That's correct. When you rename the Avant executable you automatically acquire the latest IE security features.

Are you using a dual core processor? There seems to be some problems with the latest builds of Avant not playing well with dual core. I'm sure the developer will address this situation in the next major upgrade.

That's odd. I can open 30+ tabs and never see that second instance of Avant in my Task Manager.

By the wat, Vtel57, What sort of security features does renaming avant.exe to iexplore.exe provide you with? And shoudnt it work anyways since the IE engine is being used in Avant?
You gain the latest IE security features (Win XP SP2). The rendering core and the security features are two different things. The security features are part of Windows, not the core IE application.

Yes indeed, I am using a Dual Core processor.

Ok, I think I've located a possible workaround to force avant to only use one processor.

Looking at http://www.techspot.com/vb/showthread.php?threadid=3913 "adron" posted some code that can be used to create an exe, which allows you to spawn a process with only one cpu (physical or logical) enabled. The code is not mine, and obviously, you should always be careful when running any code from the internet. :)

I downloaded the code, compiled a new exe (called prio), and ran avant like this:

c:\stuff\prio 1 1 "c:\program files\avant browser\avant.exe"

1 1 = run in normal priority and run on only one cpu.

To verify that it is working, I've opened task manager, right clicked on avant, and selected set affinity, and it shows only one cpu is enabled (cpu 0).

I've changed my desktop shortcut to use the new command line. Since I run avant nearly all day long, any shortcuts that are opened on my desktop should fire up in the existing 1-cpu process.

You can also open task manager, select the avant process and set the affinity every time you start avant.

This seems to be working for me, your results may be different and the usual disclaimers apply.

If by "silent Avant" Reba meant a tab she never initiated, I've had that with both Avant and Orca. I've only noticed it since I've started using the "open new:blank page." Generally there were many tabs in use. I never paid much attention to it, just assumed that I must have opened it sometime. It never gave me any trouble, was sometimes put to use, and went away when it was supposed to. I've had houseguests who behaved worse.

Well, hello guys! I have the same problem (P4 2.4 HT, WinXP Pro SP2, Avant v 10.2 B52) and also as someone told here this "ghost" avant.exe is eating CPU (up to 100%!). Hope this bug will be fixed soon.

PS. Avant is most comfortable browser for me, so it will be hard to move to another browser.

PPS. I've started trying to use force affinity principle wich was recommended by someone on this thread. For now - all is well. I will post if there will be changes.

Erm... Sorry for bad english.

AB 11 is due any time now. I expect this issue has been addressed.

Well, i'm not so impatient, yet, to move to another browser. :) I just wanted to say - i love Avant and it is most suitable browser for me. :D

Still using "force affinity". Works fine, although i've noticed that Avant is working somewhat slower than usual.

ddev, is there any way that you can link to a download of an executable of the code? Not all of us have access or knowledge of the compiler of the program.

I've been having similar problems (end task Avant) when I shutdown. I've also experienced system lockups only while running Avant 10.2 build 52. This is happening on two of my systems. One is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ system and the other is an Intel D930 based system. The problems seem to be worse on the Pentium D930 running XP Pro 64bit. Is anyone aware of any extra problems running Avant in a 64 bit environment? The X2 4200+ is running XP Media edition. Since these are both dual core systems I'm sure that is partially to blame but the XP Pro 64bit locks up much more often. Are there known issues with Avant and XP 64bit?
Thanks

wilcocoop

ps I think Avant is the best browser out there. I've tried the others but always come back to Avant. Great product!

It won't help with this bug but its a good idea to do that or apply the registry hack if you have Win XP sp2. You gain a few security enhancements by doing so.

I have this problem with build 52 that appears random too. What can be done to stop this? I do not have this problem with other apps, only Avant.

It has been reported that it is fixed in AB version 11 (it is still in a beta stage, though).

Seems that everytime I go web pages where are differen't WMV-movies, like http://www.break.com (and I run one movie), after that there are avant.exe in Processes list which wont exit -- not when I try to exit Avant or hole WIndows (XP Pro).

Are you talking about Avant Browser 10? or 11?
