Making Avant 2013 look and work (kind of) like it used to

If you've used Avant previously, and you just installed or updated to Avant 2013, you may be surprised to see the new Avant user interface, and you may want to get back to the "classic" Avant user interface. While there are some things you can do to restore some of the features, functions, and appearance of the pre-2013 Avant user interface, it's not readily apparent how to accomplish this. This is what you can do:

1. Click the Avant logo in the upper-left corner of the window.
2. Move your cursor over View in the right half of the drop-down menu.
3. Move your cursor to the right over Skins in the sub-menu.
4. Choose one of the classic skins that are listed below the line.

If you don't want the Compact Style, click View in the menu, and click Compact Style to toggle it off. Note that all but one of the classic skins that are included when you install Avant 2013 have Compact Style in the View menu. If you choose the Zest skin or a skin that you downloaded separately and added to Avant, it may not be there. In most skins, the Compact Style toggle is also in the context (right-click) menu for the toolbars.

After these changes, Avant looks and works sort of the way it used to prior to Avant 2013, but be prepared for some things that are still different from the good old Avant, like changes to the size and appearance of the buttons in the Standard Buttons bar and the Sidebar being on the right side of the window instead of the left. Also be prepared for a greatly simplified user interface that does not provide many of the Avant features and functions you are used to and depend on.

Note: There is no way to move the Sidebar back to the left where we're used to seeing and using it. You can change the width of the Sidebar by dragging its left border, but you can't move the entire Sidebar no matter what you do.

Finally taken the plunge and upgraded to latest version - yes, I'll change my profile later  - and just starting to work through the basics. First issue is that "If you don't want the Compact Style, click View in the menu, and click Compact Style to toggle it off" but I can't find Compact Style option on the View Menu.
However, the upgrade went seamlessly with an immediate impact on my CPU and my fan which lately had sounded more like an outboard motor working with the old (very old!) version. A very promising start and very relieved!!!

Patience and going through all the options is a virtue! Found the Compact Style under Tools in the Classic Skins. Think I'll stay with the new ones though.

In all but one of the classic skins distributed with Avant 2013, Compact Style is the fourth item from the top in the View menu. Only one of these, the Zest skin, does not have it there (it's not in the Tools menu either). However, all of the skins that are installed with Avant have Compact Style as the third item from the bottom in the context (right-click) menu for the toolbars. If you're using a skin that you downloaded separately and added to Avant, the menus may be organized differently. That's one of the variables you have to deal with when you use a custom skin.

In my opinion, the View menu is the right place for the Compact Style toggle, but to each his own.

I'm using the skin that was loaded automatically from my previous profile. I 'm on my IPad at the moment but I will look at the context menus later. I don't suppose there is a hidden (to me) way of putting the tabs at the bottom instead of the top?

If you're using one of the classic skins, you should be able to put the Tabs Bar on the bottom. This option is also in the context menu for the toolbars. However, if you're using one of the new skins (above the line), you 'don't suppose' correctly -- the Tabs Bar, like the Sidebar, cannot be moved.

Like with the Compact Style option, there may be skins where the 'Show Tabs Bar on Bottom' option doesn't appear in the toolbar context menu. YMMV. :)

If my stiff kneck can stand the strain I think I will persevere with the new skins for now.
Thanks for quick replies!

As I said, there is no way to move the Sidebar back to the left where we're used to seeing and using it. This applies to both the new and classic skins in the 100+ builds.

Sorry I read "... if you're using one of the new skins (above the line), you 'don't suppose' correctly -- the Tabs Bar, like the Sidebar, cannot be moved " and thought that meant I could move both if I was using one of the skins below the line. Never mind.

Hi,

Though a newbie on these boards, have been using AB since shortly after its introduction.

Prior to posting here, I did both a thorough Google search and a forum search for the issue I'm posting about, but surprisingly, couldn't find anything specific to why I'm writing, unless it's too basic, or just unique to the system I'm using.

Am very appreciative of the detailed maps of all the shortcuts on AB, however wasn't able to see what used to be on AB: toggling the menu bar from left to right or vice versa.

Writing this on a Lenovo Flex2, I'll temporarily have for about another week.
On this system, the menu bar is on the left side.
On another Lenovo Flex2 I also had temporarily, (different size screen than this),
the menu bar was on the right side.

Been trying to move the menu bar to the right side of the screen, (because I'm a rightie?)

Moving/toggling the menu bar used to be a no-brainer, by using the F keys (10 or 11?), but on this system it doesn't do anything, nor did I see any mention of it on the keymap shortcuts.

Totally agree about the Avant 2013 issues and likewise, am using the old skins.
As my profile indicates, I'm on Windows 8.1 touch screen, which is new to me.

As a result, I haven't yet had the chance to learn how to debug its arcanities.

Any clues to this mystery?

Since you're using an "old UI" skin, File -> Compact Style should move the Menu bar to the right side for you.

Which classic skin are you not getting Compact View? Other than the "new skin/classic skin" UI difference, the skins should not be affecting anything other than the look of the UI... not their content, etc.
