Rocky Mountain Oysters

Post by darth » Sun Aug 24, 2008 5:55 pm

Rocky Mountain Oysters are deep fried bull testicles according to article on http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/08/2 ... 20917.html. I've heard LBJ, former President, from Texas was quite fond of Rocky Mountain Oysters. Has anyone on the forum tried them? So far I'm holding off.

Rocky Mountain Oysters aren't Oysters at all.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prarie_oyster wrote:Rocky Mountain oysters is a North American culinary name for edible offal, specifically buffalo, boar, or bull testicles. They are usually peeled, coated in flour, pepper and salt, sometimes pounded flat, then deep-fried. This delicacy is most often served as an appetizer.

Thanks DrDrrae for definition and recipe for rocky mountain oysters from wikipedia. I have never seen this item for sale in Supermarkets. Then perhaps, it depends on the area of the US/or perhaps other countries also, in which one resides.

With that many nationalities around London, There's a good chance that some do eat this reported "delicacy".

I followed this topic with amusement for a while and I guess it's my turn to share my experiences first hand.

No, I wasn't on "Fear Factor" or "Survivor", I had them at a restaurant in Mexico City. They are delicacy in Mexico as well as in Spain (no wonder with all the bullfights  ) and are called "Criadillas".

They were cooked and sliced. They looked and tasted a bit like an Italian sausage. Not bad at all. We did not tell the rest of the party what we had ordered as an appetizer until the plate was empty.

Some of the men immediately got out their cellphones and called their wives and girlfriends, warning them about the aphrodisiac they just had.

Scubamaster, good informative post on "Criadillas". There is a saying "Different strokes for different folks". Guess that applies to food also.

I've ate them at a bar in Middletown, IN. They were smashed and breaded, then deep fried like a breaded tenderloin. You wouldn't know the difference until told. Especially after a few cold drafts.
