Learning......music, did it help?

Post by ReleaseRoderick » Wed Feb 07, 2007 9:16 pm

When you were learning English as a 2nd langauage,
did you actively use lyrics and listen to music as part of the tuition.....? If so, which songs really helped and why and how. This Q is to help moderate in an intense disagreement at a Bulgarian language school.

Well English was already my first language... but, I have found songs useful in the learning of other languages.

What songs are best? That's surely a matter of personal preference. You'll learn most from the music you enjoy listening to.

While English was my first language too (at least the Brooklyn, New York version of it), I found that Opera helped me greatly in my learning of Italian. The arias of Puccini and Verdi (to name two of the greatest operatic composers) gave me a feel for the language, especially (of course) the tonal ability of Italian words. While this wasn't enough for fluency, I found that it was more than enough for expression. Give me a good "tune" and I'll remember and speak the words: hopefully, like music. Ciao! :)

In short, music "soothes the savage soul" and opens it to a profounder state of awareness. Then again, I'm currently listening to Led Zeppelin (old relic that I am) and that's cool too. 8) It's the getting there, not the conveyance, that matters. Thanks, Denny.
