how many passwords do you have to remember ?

Post by UFO UFO » Sat Dec 03, 2005 9:56 pm

i just wanted to know how many passwords do you have to know or have it written somewhere (including using programs) for using the internet on forums , emails and so...

i also want to know how we really have to get a better solution for using passweords or maybe intergrated password manager inside the browser.

I bet most people only use one to three passwords for everything because it's easier to remember.

I use 1 main password and change it depending on how many characters are needed.

Over 50!

I use ROBOFORMS in AVANT, but it isn't available in ORCA yet.

I also use a small FREE program called PASSWORD PROMPTER that will generate passwords, saves them and can COPY and PASTE the passwords without users seeing the word. I only have to remember the same one pasword for PP and RF.

It isn't a SAFE COMPUTING practice to use the same passwords on several sites and a password program will also defeat the KEYSTROKE LOGGERS used by virus writers.

Combined?.... 200+ (includes all machines on my network + my sisters, mothers and both of my brothers machines). Don't trust programs such as AIR enough to remember them for me ....

Almost all passwords are a minimum 300 char length (AN/ANS). Only passwords less than this are those where I have no choice (i.e. my router and my ISP).

Passwords are auto-generated using a custom generation routine;

Interesting program Steve, but how do you remember them and what provides the correct one for whatever site you need to login to?

To be honest, I've no idea how I can remember them.... for some reason I just do (always have done). Though for obvious reasons, I've got a copy of each printed out .... just incase.

Rofl, interestingly enough, I have major difficulties remembering what day it is .... (if it's not something to do with PC's, my memory doesn't seem to want to know)

Same way a singer remembers the words to a song, or an author - the words to a novel ...

When I create a new password for a resource, the first thing I do is spend an hour or so looking at it, then testing myself. After that, I don't have much trouble remembering it. Been able to do that for aslong as I can remember.

I'm not perfect by any means... I get chars mixed up occasionally, which is why I have them printed out ;)

Until I was about thirty I had a near eidetic memory. I never had to keep an appointment calender or read something more than once to remember it. For some reason, as I got older, I lost the ability to a great degree--I think it's pretty normal, so it's a good thing you've got all of them written down!

Long live RoboForm!

Sara
