Oldest Apps - Tried and True

Post by TOMaxwell » Mon Mar 21, 2005 12:41 pm

What is the oldest application (upgraded or not doesn't matter) you are still using which did not come pre-installed on your system. You may have downloaded it from the net or got it from a cd you bought or acquired somewhere. If you're still using the app it must be something special and everybody would like to know about it.

The oldest Freeware App I am using is WS_FTP LE. I've had it since the days of Win95 and it is still indispensible and I use it almost everyday.

The oldest purchased App is probably Excel. I've been using that for almost 15 years and the version I OWN (as opposed to those I have used at work) is Office 97, upgraded to Office 2k Pro.

HAHA! Good topic!

I'm still using a Microsoft Windows 3.1 program called "Card File". Some of you may remember it. It's a "virtual rolodex" type of address database. It's pretty neat. I'm attached to it. Although, I don't use it primarily anymore. It is still on my system, though. I now use a program called AZZCardFile, which is able to convert Card File .crd data files.

Later...

Edit: Here's a shot of CardFile...

The oldest program I use predates Windows--It's My Mail List by MySoftWare. I run it from a floppy cause it's a pain to try to run a DOS program in XP.

I bought a Windows version of it and found it useless. I was able to print out a pocket sized directory (3" x 61/4") with the original (can't anymore, it's not geared for today's printers) on plain paper. The newer one I got needed Day-Timer like sheets and basically got one entry per page, where the old one could get 10 or more on a smaller page.

I just tried to get a date by Googling it, but all I found were current products. I did find this article about the beginning of the Company:

http://www.computeruser.com/articles/da ... 01,04.html

I'd say the program dates back to 1990 or 91. I was also using Word Perfect in DOS at the time--ugh!

I also still have Arachnid from 1991 for Windows 3.0!

I still play it too!

HaHA! I have Lotus SmartSuite, but have never installed it on my current rig.

I used to do Lotus consulting as a Financial Analyst. I was known as the "Macro Wizard" back in the late 80s.. 8)

Locoscript for PC, from somewhere around 1983!

Actually I don't have it on at the moment because I just did a reinstall, but it will be going back because I still have documents in that format to convert.

This is not a recommendation mind you, it's a really clunky early word processor. It's just that I once had an Amstrad and this is what it used.
