Avant hangs when explorer window is closed

Post by canadian69 » Fri May 21, 2010 9:54 pm

If I am running Avant browser and close out my open explorer windows ( not Internet Explorer, just simple windows explorer, ie. My Computer, My Docs, any open folder window) Avant hangs.

I am forced to go into task manager and end the avant.exe process and restart it. This has been a consistent problem for me with Avant through the last 3-4 updates. I keep hoping that the latest version will address the issue, but alas that has not happened.

I can consistently reproduce this problem 99%

I am running...
Windows XP Pro SP3
Avant Browser 11.7 build 46 SR
Symantec AV Corporate 10
Spyware Doctor 6
Roboform 6.9.2

Is there a way to debug this?

That sounds like a general windows problem. Do you have any problem at all with Internet Explorer? Is your profile correct that you are still using IE7?

I dont use IE but it does work, not sure what you mean by "is my profile correct". Firefox works fine. I have no issues with any other apps or windows xp in general. System works fine. If its a windows problem then I have to ask why is Avant the only affected application?

XP is correctly patched with all the latest updates as well. Running windows updates is actually the only time I ever use Internet Explorer, otherwise I am using Avant Browser or Firefox. Avant is my prefered and Default browser. It would be nice to debug this little glitch.

Your profile is the information that you submitted about yourself and is shown under your name every time that you make a post to this forum to facilitate our assisting you. It can be changed/updated here.

Avant Browser is an "IE Shell" - it makes use of the version of Internet Explorer that is on your system - which I have been asking about it.

Concerning your problem, firstly reset Internet Explorer then see if it has also fixed Avant: Close all browsers then go to Control Panel >> Internet Options >> Advanced >> Reset

Also, why use IE for Windows Updates? Avant should do that correctly. Click here.

I have updated my profile to reflect the current running versions of IE and AB.

I have reset IE as instructed, restarted the browsers and can still reproduce the fault with AB.

When try to use AB for windows updates I get the following error (To continue, you must first add this website to your trusted sites in Internet Explorer). I have added the required sites to the trusted zones window, but it just keeps giving me that error. IE howsever when launched works fine for updates. Just to reitterate, IE doesnt hang when I close explorer windows.

Also, the only thing that runs in Avant that is different from IE or Firefox is Roboform 6.9.2

Let's see what going on with your system: run a HiJackThis scan on your computer and post the results log.

Another interesting note on this issue, if I have several explorer.exe windows open, e.g. my computer, my documents, d:\, c:\games etc. while Avant is running, I can close and open explorer windows all day long without a problem, but when I close out that last explorer window, thats when Avant hangs (stops responding, no error message). As long as I keep at least one window running Avant runs fine. Avant runs fine on its own of course. The problem only arrises after I open up an explorer.exe window and then close it.

Can you try to disable both PunkBuster and RoboForm and see if that makes any difference.
Also, you probably don't need both Spyware Doctor and Symantec AV running together.

I turned off Roboform (unchecked) under Avant Browser Options / Add ons, restarted AB, no problem any more.

Rechecked Roboform, restarted, still no problem.

Toggling the Roboform add-on in options seems to have resolved the issue. I will keep an eye on it for the next little while to see if its permanent :-)

Thanks for the help!

P.S. You would think that Symantec Corp 10 would be good enough, alas it is not. I have had two nasty spyware/malware infections in the last couple months, one required me to restore from a backup as it corrupted the OS to the point that I could only boot in safemode. Both times Symantec either missed it entirely or only captured parts and I think the really bad one actually disabled SAV entirely. Yes SAV definition files are updated. Spyware Doctor misses stuff too. It may clean out an issue, but then leaves behind the .exe/.dll/.sys files that the spyware/malware injected. Like in the windows\system32 directory or C:\Documents and Settings\%user%\Local Settings\temp folder etc. It's too bad SAV isn't more comprehensive, but it must be difficult to keep ahead of all the spyware out there.
