Multiple running avant.exe processes

Post by ADukes » Mon Sep 25, 2006 9:58 am

What's the reason for the second (marked) avant.exe process?

Image

The process always uses a CPU load between 10 & 20%, memory usage is always the same 10.172k/6.860k.
Also the process keeps running after closing Avant and I'm unable to end it manually.
Thanks Anderson for checking out my AB 11.0 feature request list,
now it's time to go on with 11.8:

In version 10.2, Anderson stated that one was a helper process that should close automatically when it was not needed. I would assume that that would apply here, too, although I thought this issue had been resolved before the final 11.0 was released.

He's the only one that could confirm my assumption, though.

Thought that too, but it doesn't look so. This was the second time I had it with build 5 and IIRC I had it once with one of the Final/Puplic Previews.

I've noticed that one of the avant.exe instances opens up a listening port on 19780 on the loopback adapter (127.0.0.1).

Even though this adapter and port are not accessible from the network (or Internet), there are accessible to any other process running on the workstation, including malware.

I wonder what 3rd party testing has been done to ensure that there are no potential vulnerabilities here.

Multiple avant.exe processes

Still occuring with 11.0 B11

Multiple copies of avant.exe staying resident, each taking anywhere from 12mb to 64mb of memory with low cpu utilization.

Windows XP SP2, Dual Core Athlon CPU

I've split this from the originating thread, and moved it here as the thread it was in referred to the 10.x series.

Once two others confirm this issue, it will be moved to the confirmed bug's forum.

That error is due to the file "avsc.exe", and is a known issue.

I've changed your screenshot so it's just a link as it's currently unfortunately, larger than the rules allow.

... but you're welcome :)

Hm, doesn't look like my problem.

Are you sure that you don't have multiple Avant instances running?

Positive. The screenshot was taken 30 min after ending my last Avant Browser session. There's no Avant icon in the tray and I can end the orphaned processes using Taskman.

Interestingly enough, the issue does not occur on the same box while running Vista 64 B5600.

Could something be hosed within windows? The box is an XP MCE (SP2), Athlon 64 X2 4400

I think I've opened Pandora' box when I first filed this "bug" and found many positive replies.

However, I have discovered that when I do *NOT* open my fav radio station in AB 11.0.6 based on WMP (v10.00.00.4036) my AVANT.EXE will usually close properly and will not leave a ghost session in the TaskManager. Although it is not always the case, generally I have the impression that as soon as I start streaming music on my system this will leave the ghost session.

I'm also running PDF viewing in a stand-alone Adobe Reader and am not using the embedded form (which froze AB some time ago).

It could be that the problem is not caused at shutdown but is generated in a very early stage by other objects that, due to some delays in notifying shutdown, do not properly release resources (this could explain why AB continues to grow in memory) leaving orphan memory processes that AB is unable to kill and impedes to shutdown properly.

I have had this problem since i first installed AB 11

I have been patient and hoping that the next release would fix it.
But it hasnt, even after 4 updates.

So i had to find out what the problem was.
I read here at the forum that no one really knew what it was and some suggested that it could be some error/application in Windows that could be the culpret. Some said that if you renamed or deleted asrv.exe that it would fix the problem, maybe it did for some, but not for me.
Whatever, there is a problem with AB 11.* and not any application or Windows.

I thought it could be so easy that it could be an error in the installer/upgrade from 10 to 11 that f**ked (swedish word for Broken) it up. So i uninstalled it completely and then reinstalled the latest version that was on download.com and got the same error but this time with an addition of another process.
Insted of having 2 instances of Avant.exe i had 3 instances.

This time I uninstalled AB and deleted the folder in C:\Program Files
and installed AB 10.2.051 and still got 2 instances of Avant.exe
At least a step in the right direction.

Of course Registry...
I UnInstalled AB and deleted the folder and all registry entrys with avant.exe rebooted the computer and installed AB 10.2.051

At last back to the same old fully working AB with only 1 instance of Avant.exe.

Im guessing here but it seems like its a regsetting thats not as it should be like 'Current User' and 'All User' dupe.

But the biggest bug in this BETA version of AB is the loss of the old settings.
That made that 2 of my friends uninstall AB and install Firefox insted.

Yes i know its Final version of AB but i have tried other apps that was Beta and didnt have as many big errors like this Final AB.

But i still like AB and still use it. (AB 10.2.051)
Its a great browser.

PS.
Mind tha spelling, english isnt my native language.

Hi,
Try this ,

File ->New avant Browser
now check that there are 2 avant's running.

SO when you browser crashed, and the prev avant did not exit completely.

when you hit athe avant icon to start again, it opened a New avant browser ..
this can happen multiple times
