"E-book"-sites extremely slow to load and crashing Avant

Post by Phonemes » Sat May 22, 2010 9:48 am

Hi,

A number of sites which I use a lot are nearly impossible to view in Avant. Both of the links below are to sites which allow you to read archived copies of books. In both cases, Avant is extremely slow to load the site and uses huge amounts of memory. In the case of scribd.com, I've watched it shoot up to over 350.000 kB. before I killed it. Avant often freezes in the end with these kind of sites. Also, it is often impossible to use the page search function, even after it has fully loaded. It takes ages before what you type appears in the search box.

IE8, by the way, has similar problems with these sites, but Chrome not at all.

Any idea what the problem might be with such sites? Is there anything I can do to remedy this?

http://www.scribd.com/doc/26527789/Orig ... rigin-1868 ---did indeed load slowly.
http://www.archive.org/stream/originals ... r_djvu.txt ---loaded normaly.
Both sites tried twice. I would say you have a server/lSP problem.
Are you wired or wi-fi?

Hi,

I have a wifi connection but I don't think this is the problem. I've checked and the connection is absolutely stable. And as I said, slowness is only a problem with certain sites and it only happens in Avant (and to a lesser extent IE8), with Avant using large amounts of memory. The slowness doesn't occur with Chrome, and Chrome is much more frugal in the amount of memory it claims when loading a site like scribd.com.

Only for AdMuncher. Disabling AdMuncher makes no difference in loading times or memory usage.

Out of interest, can you try the latest test release of Avant (v11.8 alpha 2) to see if it is still slow there.

Just tried to load the scribd.com link in 11.8 Alpha and it is just as slow and memory-intensive. This time, though, I got a message from IE8 (in Dutch - so I don't know the wording in English), warning me that a script was causing slowness and might result in the browser freezing, and advising me to abort the script. I chose not to abort, and then Avant came up with a message about frozen tabs.

Scribd.com loads very slow and I get the slow script error message as well in both IE 8 and Avant (11.7 Build 46 in this case). It seems to be due to the shear size of the page. You're not getting this problem with Chrome because it's Javascript engine is 1000 times better than IE's.

OK, now I see. I guess I'll just use Chrome when I have to visit scribd.com then. A pity though that Avant has to rely on IE's poor Javascript engine>
