Bookmarks lost ...

Post by bigboreshooter » Mon Dec 21, 2009 2:40 pm

Help needed!

I lost my Avant bookmarks from folder.
The icon bar for bookmarks is empty.
I copied back an bookmarks.dat to .default but that didn't work
Which additional files do I have to copy back to which subfolder at folder .default?

Regards

Were you using Online Storage? if so read this: Online Storage Recovery

Do these wiki articles help?
What happened to my favorites/bookmarks?
Avant Configuration Files and Their Purposes

If copying the bookmarks.dat file, remove all files in the bookmarks folder (bookmarks.dat and bookmarks.dat.bak and bookmarks.dat.vdt) then place your backed up file there.

The folder location is "%appdata%\Avant Profiles\.default\bookmarks\" (if not using online storage).

Dear Kudos,
Thank you for your help!
My bookmark.dat files are 24 and 27 kB size, but appear as empty.
I assume they are defect. Is there a tool to repair these?
Or can you repair these when I send them to you?

Thanks in advance

kudos, I tried to send two bookmarks.dat files by a PM, but files with .dat and several other extentions were rejected. Which extention is allowed?

Zip them up, PM them and I'll have a look.

Is there any way to read and decrypt the bookmarks file programmatically? I am working on a kind of bookmark manager (it is inended to at least read all bookmark files), but exported bookmarks (in netscape format) aren't as good as could be, i.e. there are no correct added/last visited dates, at least. Is there any algorithm and who can provide me with it?

I'm afraid that there is not - I have previously asked the developers that same question and not had a response.

kudos, can you ask them again, please? Or please give me some advice how to contact developer team? To be honest, I see no reason to encrypt bookmarks at all, but even there are some, there should be a way to decrypt them to restore or to process in some other way (to import them in my case), at least those which belong to "current user".

I shall try again, but I don't expect a response. Personally I was waiting to see what they did with v12 in case everything changed.

L-Daemon, I asked and here are the replies:
I'm only able to tell you what those files do. All files can't be read with notebook are encrypted so there's no use for you.

...

The files named with .vdt in the end are for checking whether related data get conrupted like bookmarks.dat.vdt for checking bookmarks.dat. I'm sorry it's not good to tell you the encryption algorithm for security sake. I wish you understand.

...

Anderson will add the backup&restore feature into next version. It will come soon. If you feel it is very necessary to resolve the problem ASAP, I can inquire Anderson about this.

A confirmed response I've got is that the backup&restore feature is already in the coming new version.

I have been an avantbrowser for more than 5 years
Now i have a problem with my bookmarks, i have the .dat file but it seems to be corrupted.
I'm using a previous version from one year ago, but i need the updated file.
Is there any way i can recover it? Can anybody help me?

OK, send me the file via PM. *BUT* if the operating system (Windows) has overwritten the file then recovery would not be possible (I have had users send me files that were quite big but the contents were all zero's - suspected corruption from an anti-virus program scanning the file while it was being written to).
