Flash/Files Fail

Post by Ma®©uS » Thu Nov 26, 2009 1:35 pm

I'm not sure if this issue is caused by Avant, but possibly an underlying IE8 issue. Unfortunately I have no idea what causes it, even with much Googling and the fault is so random I have no way of testing it on IE8 alone, as I cannot detemine when the fault will occur.

Basically, every so often my IE8/Avant browser fails to:
a) Display Flash videos
b) Download files

In the case of Flash Files it has "Flash Player 10 not loaded..." on right click, and for downloads its ticks away at 0% for a minute then gives an error that it cannot connect to the Internet Site. Both these issues will be at the same time. Yet normal web content will load, no problem - text and images.

If I try the website in Firefox, it works just fine. But the only way to fix IE8/Avant is a reboot.

Anyone heard of this issue, and a fix, please?

Thanks!
Marcus

Hello,
Are you using any proxy server? If not th, Please try to go to Tools>Internet Options...>Connections
If you're connecting automatically, Click LAN settings
Othervise, Select your internet connection and make sure that proxy settings are blank and nothing is checked.
In Avant, Please make sure that under Tools>Proxy, Connect Directly is selected.
If the above doesn't help, Please post some information regarding your connection. Do you have a WIFI connection or wired?

No, no proxy, no WiFi - just plain old Broadband/Cable.

Like I said, I don't think it's a direct connection issue - there some form of conflict "somewhere" causing certain things to stop, or lock out.. if it were a connection issue Firefox would not work either. But I can get Firefox to do whatever IE8/Avant is refusing to do.

To be honest, I never recall seeing this issue before Windows 7, either.

Just to add, also, I've tried switiching this new "Protected Mode" on/off during the problem. It didn't make any difference.

Hello Ma®©uS can you remove IE 8 then re install it that may fix it. Because you say IE 8 is the only one that doesnot work. Please reply if you have done this already or if you try it post the result please :)

Have you checked all the settings mentioned above?
Do you have to enter username/password to connect the internet or it's connecting automatically through Local Area Connection?
Have you recently installed any security software (anti virus/internet security tool etc)
Have you recently installed any Internet Explorer's addon (Toolbar/BHO etc)?
Do you have the "clean" retail version of Windows Seven or some OEM branded version? Or maybe you have the "N" version which came without Internet Explorer?

Ya, I checked them all. They're all standard.

No password needed with my ISP.

Just bog-standard AVG. Doesn't affect Firefox though.

No Toolbars or addons with my IE/Avant.

Clean Retail version on Win 7. Not OEM. It came with IE.

@Axeman
The problem with this is I could reinstall IE now and not know if it worked. The problem crops up so randomly, I couldn't tell you if it will reoccur in 5 minutes, or in a week. At the moment its happening about once every 3 or 4 days. I haven't seen a pattern to it though. I was hoping someone else had seen this happen before, and knew the cause. Seems its not a frequent fault though..

My IE8 installation is pretty "fresh" though. Installed just a few weeks ago, straight after Win 7. The only "addon" as such, is Avant itself. Daily browsing is fine, until this problem pops up.

What do you mean? Windows 7 came with IE8, So how come you've installed IE8 after Windows 7?
Anyway, Have you installed just the anti virus from AVG or also the internet security tool? Was it the latest version? If internet security, Have you tried to check the firewall settings? You're also saying that the problem arrise just in certain part of day (Evening?) Have you checked your internet's download speed in Firefox when the problem occurs? Have you downloaded the latest updates from WindowsUpdate (Especially the kb973688)?

I don't recall the exact process of installing Win 7 - it might have had the ballot option, but I don't recall.
Regardless, IE8 is as old as Win 7 - installed with or just after Win 7. Probably with.. thinking about it.

AVG is plain AV, and the e-mail plugin. No Internet Security or Link Scanner.

Yes, checked Firewall when it first happened. Disabled FW. Didn't help though.

Firefox runs normal when IE goes funny. No slower.

My Windows Updates are Auto. The KB# you gave is not listed in my update history.

The problem can occur at anytime, day or night. There is no pattern based on hours.

My standard reply for all problems concerning Internet Explorer is to reset it:

Close all browsers then go to Control Panel >> Internet Options >> Advanced >> Reset

And my standard reply for Flash problems with IE is to reinstall the plugin:

* Close all browsers
* Uninstall Flash - Uninstall tool
* Remove folder %windir%\system32\Macromed\Flash\
* Reboot computer
* Reinstall Flash ActiveX Plugin (if using Vista - run as administrator)

Thanks, will bear the Reset option in mind if.. or rather.. when it happens again, and let you know. I reinstalled Flash the 2nd or 3rd time it happened though. Didn't help. But as downloads can't be accessed either when this problem occurs, its something wider scope.

Just got this daft issue again with Avant/IE8 preventing files from downloading and Flash vids from playing. The error says it cannot access the internet site where the download comes from.

BEFORE rebooting I tried "Reset" option in IE Options, as Kudos suggested. It didn't do a thing.

I then tried: FireFox, Opera, and Google Chrome. ALL 3 could download a file from Firehippo just fine, so it's not an internet/connection problem. This isolates the problem to IE8 and/or IE8 w/Avant.

So, that brings me back to a completely unknown issue.. somewhere.. #-o

Told you it was random though.. its been 2 weeks since it last happened.

Weird, huh?

Okay, this happened today - but I've noticed that if I run CCleaner the issue suddenly resolves itself, without even having to restart IE/Avant. Updated to build 45, but its the first time its happened since my last post. What I've done is saved the results of CCleaner immediately before the issue "fixed" itself - if anyone notices anything "unusual" here that suggests a bug/malware/trojan/virus/etc please let me know? Whatver is causing the issue, surely must be one of these? Thanks.

Contradicting what I just typed.. it froze up loading Flash/downloading files again moments after, and running CCleaner did not help.. was forced to reboot. Annoying issue, whatever it is!

Thanks for the report, unfortunately it doesn't tell us much.
CCleaner does do a lot of additional cleaning that it doesn't log.
One such item is the DNS cache which is where the problem may lie.
You can always do a comparison before and after:

View the DNS cache in a command prompt window by issuing the command:

Code: Select all

ipconfig /displaydns | more
Flush the local DNS cache by performing the following command:

Code: Select all

ipconfig /flushdns

Thanks.

Would this also not affect other browsers? As I've mentioned before, when this issue occurs I can hop onto Firefox, Opera, Google Chrome, etc and there's no problem, yet IE8/Avant continue to display the problems whilst running parallel to them?

Perhaps there is a virus of some form. My AVS doesn't seem to identify anything, and with it first happening within days of installing Win 7 I am rather surprised at not being able to find this reported elsewhere.

I am blaming IE8 rather than Avant, because the issue persists in standard IE8 when Avant goes hickey.. but not in other browsers. Core issue, or conflict, maybe.. idk.

True, I failed to re-read all of your postings (sorry!) - but by not having Win7, I am unaware how it handles DNS queries. It may be intelligent enough to cache them for IE core applications, but requery for other requesting apps.

I have heard of Win7 users complaining of similar issues and disabling ipv6 seems to help many.
Also resetting the IP stack with this command (elevated): netsh int ip reset

But let's wait until it happens again then produce and examine the log as requested.

Ah okay, I understand - I'll get additional logs next time round before running CC or rebooting, and see what comes up. Whatever it is seems it disappear following a reboot and reoccur at a totally random moment sometime. Haven't determined a pattern either, which doesn't make things easier.

Thanks!

I think that was everything I needed to get.
