AB cannot remember

Post by jelucius » Wed Jun 04, 2008 11:08 pm

Have been using AB forever and love it. Recently started it up and it had forgotten all my settings, so I reset them all and closed it. Next opening, it had forgotten again. Have read through all the threads and found one blaming SpySweeper, so I removed that. Deleted Avant profiles folder and let it create a new one. Removed AB and reloaded. Removed IE 7 and reloaded that. Pulled a profile off another computer and copied it over Avant profiles and that works, but only for a short while until I close and reopen or come out of hybernation. This is the best browser, so I have to fix it. Any insights

Hi Jelucius

I've always been able to fix major profile problems with the following method, you seem to have jumped around a lot so just try it step by step;

Remove AB
Ensure all profiles/settings/temp internet and temp install files have been deleted.
Reboot
Remove IE7
Reboot, login, reboot again (i'm convinced some final remove process happens after 1st reboot, 2nd is to ensure it's clean)
Install IE7
Reboot
Update IE7 with windows updates.
Reboot
Install AB
Reboot
Use AB and enjoy.........

This may work for all browsers and browser related persistant issues, it's just to make sure each step of uninstall and reinstall is clean and complete.

Hello,
Are you using the online-storage feature?
If yes, Please try to update to the latest build (Build 16).
I doubt that it'll help, But certain changes were made in this build "to improve the stability of online-storage".
IE8(Pro), Microsoft Security Essentials
Main PC:

Secondary PC same as primary but with Windows 7 x64 Ultimate as the OS.

Is this Build 16 you're using? It's sounds like it could be the same problem I was having here, but appearing differently:

I didn't think about it when I was having trouble, but I had to keep telling Avant to not show me Tip upon Start. I think Build 16 has some writing issues.

Have you added any other software recently? I understand there are security programs that have caused this behavior in the past.

Updated AVG Free to version 8 recently and chose the toolbar option. I suspected this also, but after removing AVG completely, still got the same behavior. I am still suspicious of it though. I have another computer that I have upgraded in the same manner and AB works fine.

i use avg free version 8 too, but with linkscanner disabled... it's not the problem, or shouldn't be at least...

just out of interest, do you have many errors on your system on the whole? does scandisk kick in on a regular basis when booting, or does windows seem to take a long time to load or login?

could you create another user account on the machine and another online storage account, just to rule out your accounts specifically, this way we can see if it's your enviornment or the software itself. this must be a pain, but it's all for a good reason...

if you get odd behaviour from a few programs, it might be time for a rebuild...

Rarely have errors, scandisc only runs on the rare occasions that I set it to run. Windows loads quickly since I hybernate most of the time. Don't use online storage and have no interest in it. My experience with techs is when they don't know how to solve a problem, they suggest a rebuild.
