Avant Version:

Avant corrupt temp file

Post by kelleyu » Sat May 12, 2007 11:57 pm

I am using the latest v11.5 Beta 4 under Vista Ultimate x64 (running as a tray icon), and I continually get this error:

avant.exe: F:\Temp\Personal Temp\$.ficn$\500000000.icon is corrupt - please restart the application.

I am also getting this minidump:

Code: Select all

OS: Workstation, No ServicePack
CPU: AuthenticAMD, AMD AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3300+, MMX @ 2433 MHz

Module name: C:\Program Files (x86)\Avant Browser\avant.exe

All those icons do is work as your FavIcon files in the browser. Have you tried deleting that icon?

Re: Avant corrupt temp file

Post by kelleyu » Sun May 13, 2007 4:18 pm

I have deleted the entire directory several times, since it is recreated each time Avant is started. It makes no difference.

I have been using Avant since its first release, and have used previous version on my current setup. I have never had a problem like this before. Much as I like the features in the new version, I guess I will have to revert to an older version. Oh, well.

Found the problem. Somehow, when I created my Temp partition, it ended up being FAT32. Apparently, the directory structure was corrupted (I don't know why Windows didn't catch it), so most of the temp files had problems. I recreated the partition as NTFS, and the problem went away.

Thanks for trying to help.

Interesting idea to make a partition purely for Temp files.

Not a new idea, by any means. If you have two drives, you set up a partition for your virtual memory, temp files, internet cache, etc., pn a separate drive to increase system performance. If you have three drives, you can set up two virtual memory files, and Windows uses the drive that isn't busy.

I have my page and temp files on a 20GB RAID partition. It needs to be that large if you render videos and create your own DVDs.

This is actually recommended by Microsoft, if you have the hardware. Just make sure that it isn't a FAT32 partition!

Actually what does really matter is to have the virtual memory file on a different physical drive than the OS; temp files then may be placed wherever you wish, better if you have a third physical drive ;-)

The point is to have I/O intensive operations on different drives to have them run in parallel. Having temp files (temp, browser cache etc.) on a separate partition also helps in terms of fragmentation, since those files by definition are created, deleted and resized much more often than OS files or user data files.

It also keeps all of the trash in one place, which can be useful.
