IE6 -> IE7?

Post by Lord Chaos » Sat Oct 14, 2006 5:36 pm

Is there any point to upgrading IE6 to IE7 on a WindowsXP 64 Bit Pro, running avant almost exclusively?

my machine is a 4200+ AMD64FX2, 4 Gb Corsair memory and primary drive is 2xRaptor10K in Raid configuration for optimal speed.

Yes there is. IE7 introduces some major improvements to how the browser engine renders web pages, and it should also be a lot more secure.

However I would wait until the final version of IE7 is available, as it is quite likely you will need to uninstall the beta before installing the final.

Is it only more secure if you rename avant.ex to iexplore.ex?

Would it be hard to uninstall?

How do you check if avant is actually using it...Avant looks the same other than its acting....odd.

The unistall issue was only with the IE 7 betas. Starting with IE 7 RC1 it upgrades as should the final version which is expected no later than by the end of October.

You can tell that Avant uses IE 7 by going to Tools -> Internet Options -> General and see the new options like Tabs.

I believe you still need to rename avant.exe to iexplore.exe if you want the security features enabled. The problem with doing this is that Avant runs into a few problems (graphics in RSS reader blocked etc.). To avoid that, install the Avant XP-Security registry tweaks from DrDrrae.
