Cannot Download 11.0 B12

Post by Don Lisa » Tue Oct 10, 2006 8:43 pm

I am using Avant Browser Version 10.2 Build 52 as a paid and legitimate user. When I try to download Version 11.0 Build 12, the install screen shows downloading progressing to about 50% then hangs up there and does not complete the download. Then I have to go to control-alt-delete and click on "end now" to delete the "program is not responding" screen. Please help. Don Lisa.

Funny, you seem to be the only user that ever paid and registered for a browser that is completely free... :D

Your problem looks like it has some connection problem rather than an Avant issue. But just to make sure, have you tried to download Avant with Internet Explorer?

Dear Scubamaster: Thanks for the reply. I am a paid user because AvantBrowser asks for donations from satisfied users, so I donated some time ago. I tried both Internet Explorer and AvantBrowser directly, but I get the same result, namely, the .exe file downloads, but when I click on it to extract, install, and run it, I only get 50% installation before it hangs up, requiring me to use the control-alt-delete function to overcome the hangup. Nevertheless, when I click on my AvantBrowser desktop shortcut icon, the program seems to run okay, but I don't know which version is running, the old or the new. Any other suggestion? Don Lisa.

You can find out which version of Avant you are running via;

Help > About Avant Browser

With regards to the download itself, please try downloading it from the archives, and let us know if the issue persists.

If you go to Help -> About Avant Browser it will show you the currently installed version.

I was confused because you mentioned that your download stopped at 50% but it looks like your download completed ok but your installation stopped at 50%. Now it will be interesting to find out if the update actually took place.

If you don't mind configuring Avant 11 from scratch, it could help to uninstall the old Avant version first. If you want to keep your old settings, we can help you to make a backup first.

Also if you tell us a bit more about your configuration (see my signature as an example) it would help pinpoint the problem.

Dear MysteryFM and Scubamaster: Thanks for the tips, but the same problem persists. I learned that I was actually running Version 10.2 Build 52 while I was downloading and trying to install V. 11.0 B12. So I have uninstalled V10.2 B52. Then tried downloading V 11.0 from Internet Explorer V 7.0 with same results. Then tried downloading V.11.0 from Avant Browser Archive with same result. In each case, as before, V11.0 B12 downloads but hangs up at about 50% during the extract and install. Now that V10.2 B52 has been uninstalled, I have no Avant Browser desktop icon and the .exe file has been deleted. So I cannot run any version now (But I have copies of both V10.2 B52 and V11.0 B12 saved in another location). Please help if you can.

Do other installers exhibit the same behaviour, or is it just the Avant installer?

Dear Mystery FCM: The problem is limited to just the Avant Browser installer, so far as I know. Don Lisa

Could it be that a spyware scanner is blocking the installation?

It's possible, but unlikely. If anything, it's going to be Windows "security" itself.

Dear MysteryFCM: I tried the link you provided and here is what happened: I selected "run" and the program (V.11.0 B12) hung up at about 50% installation. I selected "retry", same result. I selected "ignore" and the installation completed, but it installed V10.2 B52. My icons appeared on my desktop and Quicklaunch bar. The program seemed to be completely functional. So, I went to Avantbrowser.com and tried to download V. 11.0 B15, but I got the same result as I had last time, i.e., the .exe file downloaded, but hung up at 50% installation. So I used control-alt-delete to clear the screen. Then when I tried my AB icons (V. 10.2 B52), they no longer functioned. That is, they gave me the AB identifier screen showing V. 10.2 B52, but the program would not load. So I removed the Avant Browser program completely and started over again. I again used the link you provided, selected "run", got a download and hangup at 50% installation, selected "ignore", finished the installation of V10.2 B52 with icons on desktop and Qujicklaunch bar. HOWEVER, this time, the icons are no longer functional, only giving me the AB identification screen, but not loading the program. That's where I sit now. Don Lisa

If you are selecting "Run" when clicking a link to download a program, it actually installs it from the server (NOT recommended), instead of from the computer.

Instead, select "Save" when prompted, then run the installer from your computer (after the "save" has finished, you will be given an option called either "Run" or "Open", depending on the version of Windows).

I have the identical problem. I tried selecting "save" and then went to the saved location and ran the install (absetup.exe) from there, with identical results.

I found my problem, and this may be the same as Don Lisa: The special download/install file posted by MysteryFCM terminated with the message "c:\Program Files\Avant Browser\Avant.exe - an error occurred while trying to replace the existing file - DeleteFile failed:code5 -Access is denied". I tried removing the existing browser using "add and remove programs" in Windows Control Panel and this seemed to work, but the same error occurred afterwards. I looked in the Program Files folder and found that the folder "Avant Browser" was still there, with Avant.exe still in it. I tried to directly delete the folder and/or file and got an "access denied" messagein either case. I looked under "Processes" in Windows Task Manager and found that Avant.exe was still listed as a process. I terminated this process, and was then able to delete the file avant.exe, and the folder Avant Browser under Program Files. I then ran the install file (the normal one, not the special one provided by MysteryFCM) and all worked fine.

Dear MysteryFCM: I used the "save" and then "run" process you suggested and still got the same results as before. Apparently so did schroll_r, initially. I too got the "code 5" error message he got. I'll try the process he described to see if that cures the problem. I'll let you know. Don Lisa

The DeleteFile failed error occurs when the file being replaced, is still loaded in the system (as scholl_r mentioned, in his case, the file still in uses was avant.exe - the main Avant executable)

Dear MysteryFCM: My problem is solved. After removing the existing copy of Avant Browser, I was still left with an Avant Browser folder and its empty (i.e., no file therein) Skins subfolder in my Programs Folder. I could not delete the Skins folder, getting an Access Denied error message saying that another program was using the file even though there was no file in the Skins subfolder. I checked Processes in the Windows Task Manager function but I had previously terminated all relevant processes including the Avant.exe file and any absetup.exe files, all of which I had also previously deleted. I decided to simply turn off my computer and restart. On the restart, I tried to delete the Avant Browser Folder and its Skins subfolder in my Programs folder, and what do you know, it deleted. I was then able to sucessfully download and install V11.0 B15 from AvantBrowser.com. The program is running fine. Thanks for your help and thanks to all concerned who rendered help. Don Lisa
