how can i EXPORT groups ???

Post by selector » Fri Sep 29, 2006 9:48 am

hello

this is something i've wondered for long :

in the "Organize groups" menu, i've got an "Import Group" button, which opens a dialog letting met import CGP files
ok, cool

but how can i export my groups from my home computer to a CGP file, in order to import this CGP file onto my computer at work ????

i've searched for CGP file in the windows "Documents and Settings" folder : i can't find any, but i HAVE some groups defined in AvantBrowser!!

of course, i've noticed there's a "groups.dat" file in Documents And Settings\username\Application Data\Avant Browser

i suppose i could copy this "groups.dat" file from one computer to the other one, but to me it's very upsetting to see an "Import" button and having no CGP file to provide it !!!

thanks for your help

anthony

PS : sorry for my english ;-)

That function is for importing NetCaptor groups, not Avant's.

Copying this file is what you should do to move groups from one place to another.

Out of curiousity, what version are you using?

hmm hmm, that IS a piece of valuable info, for sure !

however, i find it quite weird that i had to post a msg on AB forum to learn that
i personnaly think the "Organize Groups" dialog should be more explicit, as far as the "Import" button is concerned ...

ok, i'll give it a try ...

i use v11 build 6, but my question about "How to import groups" applied also to previous versions of AvantBrowser
As i said, that was a someting i had wondered for long
thanks again for the explanation

I sort of see wqhat you're saying about the import function on the old groups method, but aren't they labeled "CaptorGroups" or something like that?

I was wondering about the version number since these groups are no longer used in Avant by default.

ok, you're right, when you click the "Import" button, the Filetype field in the dialog box does mention CaptorGroup, see :
Image

but, honestly, wouldn't it be far more explicit if the Import button was labeled "Import NetCaptor Group" ...? (i hadn't ever heard of NetCaptor before you told me about ...)

or, if we could get the information you gave me, by simply pressing F1 from within the Dialog box ? (AFAIC, this leads to another really missing functionnality : why isn't there a search field in AB help ?)

anyway, topic closed .... ;-) I'll use the groups.dat file

yeah, i suppose you mean that in v11, the option "Use IE Favorites as Bookmarks" is not checked by default, thus the Organize Groups Dialog is not available, and my question is not applicable.

That's true

But then, if i leave AB in the default settings (ie "IE Favorites as bookmarks" unchecked), my Groups are available from the Bookmarks menu, but only as a simple Folder, i mean :
- i can't open all the links of one group,
- i can't move a link from one group to another,
- i cant easily add the active page to en existing group ...
Correct ?
if so, AFAIC all these missing functions are lacking

from what i understand, i must choose between :
- old Groups functionnalities BUT no bookmark syncing possible
ou
- new "poor" Groups functionnalitys, BUT bookmark syncing available

Am i right ?

I am one that has missed the "non-opening folder, one-click, capability," but as many keep pointing out to me, although I don't think it's exactly the same, is that adding Open all Favorites... does duplicate this functionality. I don't like that tag at the top of everything, though, so I now use the right-click option.
selector wrote:- i can't move a link from one group to another,
You can drag and drop these just as you can your normal bookmarks... since that's what they are now. I wasn't aware you could move them in versions prior to 11. Could you drag and drop them?
selector wrote:- i cant easily add the active page to en existing group ...
The groups are just folders now. You can add them as easily as you can any bookmark. Maybe the hang up here is "easily?" Still, I don't think there's any movement or mouse-click difference. You used to have to click the Groups menu item, then the "Add to" option, and then the folder. Now you have to click the Bookmarks menu item, then right-click the folder to choose Create New Bookmark in This Folder. Personally, I keep my Groups folder on my Bookmarks bar, so it's actually less click now, especially since the right-click wasn't an option in the old Groups. (Or was it? After I typed that, I started to think it was... but then maybe not.)

Hardly anyone misses the old Groups more than me, but even I'll admit that the only thing we're missing is the Menu item (which like I said, isn't a big deal if they're kept on the bookmarks bar) and the option to not have them expand, which I used a lot for the non-program-savvy computer users in my office. I think the latter is rather big, but not enough to set off the management options for groups that we now have.

Horny, what do you mean by missing the "Expand" option. I have it here.

I'm talking about the new groups/bookmarks. We can't set them to not expand.

It works fine for me but I guess that's because I use the IE Favorites.

Bookmarks -> Groups (hover) -> Expand Groups

Yes... and the IE Favorites use the old Groups, not the new ones. If you uncheck your option to Expand Groups, that's how I preferred my groups in 10.2 and below.

Except for that one option, the new groups are exactly the same.
