11.5 Beta Avant [Resolved in RC1 and new Skin Maker]

The new beta will not use any of the user made skins as it now uses .png images instead of bmp images. I'm sure a new Skin Factory will be released with the final release of this new version, but in the meanwhile skinners should know that they might want to wait a bit before making any new skins.

Hopefully the new Skin Maker will let us convert older skins to the new format.

As long as you still have the files, not all is lost.

I know Irfanview automatically converts image file formats. I've done it BMP to JPG, so I'd assume it can do BMP to PNG.

I'd also be a bit surprised and disappointed if the new skin factory only handles PNGs.

The new Skin Maker will update skins for RC1, Open the skin in the sm and then save it.

Note: this doesn't work in the betas.

It supports both bmp and ping.

I found a alittle tidbit that you might think was a bug if you use the new skinmaker in Windows Vista. Theres a new way to save files or something in Vista where if you save it in the old way it puts the file in whats called the Virtual Store. Ok say you open a old skin in the new skinmaker to convert it to use in 11.5 and then save it. And then you might go to that folder and not beable to find the file that you just saved. Well there will be a button on the green toolbar called "Compatibility Files". That will take you to the the virtual store where it actually saved the file.

When RC1 came out for some reason I couldnt get any of my old skins to work in 11.5 after going through the process of converting them. Im assuming that its just not overwriting the old skin file properly. So I tried saving it with a new filename and thats when it was saved in the Compatibility Files folder. So then I copy and pasted the new skn file from there to the regular skins folder. And wala it worked.

Alittle background on why I think files are saved differently in Vista resulting in files being saved in the Virtual Store is because the only files that ever get saved there are from programs that are older.

Anyway, I hope this helps someone.
