Usage statistics

Post by kudos » Wed Mar 25, 2009 1:11 am

I am wondering how many people are using Orca as their main browser.
Also, if anyone is using it on pre Windows 2000 systems.

I use Orca portable with XP daily and I rarely use anything else.
If I do have to use IE, I do so with the IE-Tab extension.

i use Orca as default browser under XP SP3 and Vista about 3 weeks.
But if there will be no new versions with the fixed errors in the near future, will pass back on Avant or is faster already on FireFox. (Most strongly bad work of the mouse gestures, and not working ctrl+n sometimes)

Orca is my first browser change in over 7 years. I hate FireFox, but love this. I had been using Avant
since 2002, and this is the best improvement over that. The speed improvement is phenomenal. =D>

Using Orca as main browser on laptop (XP Pro SP3) and desktop (Vista Hm Prm 32b SP1).

I'm with Horse, although I won't be switching back to Avant, but responsivity of keyboard commands and issues with mouse gestures definitely need to be looked at. Using Avant on my friend's computer for a while today reminded me of how much they need to be improved, as every gesture and shortcut is very snappy and works as it should.

Just think of it this way. Avant is a VERY seasoned product. Coming up on its 12th version. Now I personaly consider this to be the first true version of Orca and version it was always meant to be. Its first release never made it to a final release and Im glad it didnt in all honesty. It used the gecko engine from the firefox v1 days and the way it was done was just a mess.

What im getting at is just as Avant has been updated consistently for years. So to will Orca. Orca isnt going anywhere this time, its a success. It will get updated just like Avant has. You will just have to have patience while things get worked out. Avant took the sideburner to Orca when Orca was nearing its final releases. So now that development for Avant 12 is being planned and starting to get worked on, Orca will probably need to slow down.

That is a good point. Avant is nearing version 12, whereas Orca is only at version 1! I guess it's too easy to assume Orca should "just work" since it looks exactly like it's more seasoned older brother, Avant - but I see now that they are indeed quite different underneath the chrome.

That being said, I think it's great that it has gotten so usable/stable to the point that I can use it as my main browser (plus, I got a mouse with forward/backward buttons, so now I rarely see the gesture-induced context menu. hehehe.) Plus, thanks to the Gecko engine I presume, Orca is still much faster than Avant for me despite it still having room for improvement. Can't wait to see how this project carries on!

Oh I cant use a mouse that doesnt use the forward/back buttons.. I've just got accustomed to the convenience of them. not having to move the mouse up to the top just to go back.. Sounds lazy.. but still..

Me? Nope. I use a mixture of FF, Chrome, and Opera. Isn't that weird being the Admin of an Avant/Orca support forum?

I use Orca any time I need to test a website with the Gecko engine. Other than that, I'm all Trident.
In fact, I don't even know why I have FF installed.

I'm the same way! Which is why I was using left+right click and right+left click gestures to navigate. But the dedicated buttons make it easier anyway. I actually can't believe it's taken me so long to upgrade from my 3-button red LED optical (now I have a 1600dpi laser mouse. niiiice 8) )

I find Gecko to simply render sites better in some cases; for instance, if there is text within dynamic javascript-based fields, sometimes Trident will not antialias/ClearType the text, which is ugly (just look at the comment section of any article at Engadget, for example). Gecko in that case works just fine.

Not sure what will happen with IE8 though. If speed and web standards/compatibility come near Gecko level, and Avant 12 incorporates this engine (sorry not sure! haven't been following the dev) I may be using Avant more often than now. But in the meantime, it's Orca all the way :)

I am now using Orca 1.1 build 2 as my laptop default browser -- I am a long time K-Meleon user who switched because of Orca's updatedness and convenience. :)

The only thing I miss (sorely) is the option to manually set the browser window title string...
