Suggestions for making Orca Browser even better go here. Note that Orca is no longer in development, and no new builds or versions of Orca are planned.

Orca User Agent String

Post by Pnin » Thu Jun 25, 2009 3:42 pm

K-Meleon Forum wrote:Orca guys decided to add their vendor/version substring at the end but that's not good enough... because it doesn't contain a message to the dev 'you have a problem please go to this site'... they'd see the orca part and won't care much about it... if anybody knows someone at their forums/devs, tell them it's more important to add the geckoisgecko.info bit than to add the browser vendor.

Could the "geckoisgecko.info" segment be added to the end of Orca's User Agent String in order to evangelize misbehaving sites webmasters of the importance of detecting browser rendering engines instead of browser implementation?

TIA,

You can add anything you want to the user agent string:
Type about:config into the address bar and go there.
Right-click, then on the popup menu: New >> String
In the dialog box enter: general.useragent.extra.orca.gecko
Next dialog, set the value to: geckoisgecko.info
The user agent string will now have the string appended to it.

But I wonder if Andersen will add this by default into Orca's user-agent, and whether he will add geckoisgecko.info, and whether he will add Orca to geckoisgecko.info?

Yeah, there doesn't seem to be any contact info on the geckoisgecko.info page, is there?

Perhaps try the domain owner's email: inspiralsoftwareREPLACEMEWITHATgmail.com

Pnin, do you have any ideas on how to contact geckoisgecko.info?

Sorry for a delayed answer, just haven't been around.

Not really, I don't now the right contact for the geckoisgecko.info owner, but I know the fine folk at K-Meleon managed somehow to get their browser on the page.

With my first post above, I was only trying to provide some service, since I'm registered at both forums -- and I dig both products. The quoted post was made by disrupted at K-Meleon General, maybe he could provide further info...

And many thanks to kudos for such an elegant solution.

Correction: seems that with Orca, the string to add should be www.geckoisgecko.info, because otherwise one gets sent to Google (the first result is the wanted webpage, but still somewhat inconvenient).

My current "about:" "Build identifier":

Code: Select all

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.0.10) Gecko/2009042316 Firefox/3.0.10 Orca/1.1 build 7 www.geckoisgecko.info
[/size]

P.S.: what's with the timed posted editing window at this here forum? one should always be able to edit own posts, right? 'cause typos are timeless...

So should the string be geckoisgecko.info or www.geckoisgecko.info or http://www.geckoisgecko.info ?
I see that K-Meleon thread uses the first and you use the second.
I think that Firefox/Mozilla should add it as default, then all Gecko based browsers will have it.

You should be able to contact the owner via the e-mail address you referenced as it's the same as the one listed in the WhoIs;

The domain doesn't resolve without the www. prefix, so it should be www.geckoisgecko.info (without the http:// prefix)
