Better adjustments for the Font size

Suggestions for making Orca Browser even better go here. Note that Orca is no longer in development, and no new builds or versions of Orca are planned.

Better adjustments for the Font size

Post by Merel » Mon Mar 09, 2009 8:28 pm

I'm comparing visual appearance in Orca and AB.
I opened both browsers at same time and was comparing appearances side by side.

In this screenshot both browsers are showing the same web page.

Orca Browser:
- does not have the usual blue color on window title.

- is not capable to change font size to exact same size as Avant using keys [Control +] or [Control -]
Orca font will become MUCH smaller (as shown) or become MUCH larger than in Avant.

- has no option to change text size, if I'm not mistaken

Avant Browser :
- Has a better way to adjust font size with the feature Text size (View menu)

I'm not sure that blue color title is necessarily usual nor normal. I'm using XP Silver Luna theme and my titlebars are always silver. My guess is that it's probably also possible to be changed via other Orca themes. So I'm not sure there is any "usual" title color.

Both Orca and Avant allow fine grained percentage zoom control by clicking the zoom *percentage* value (not the drop-arrow) in the bottom status bar.

Avant's View > Text Size menu is an extension of IE/Trident's 5-preset text sizing facility and is not available in Orca.

Firefox provides text only zoom by first selecting "Zoom Text Only". I wonder if Orca provides that as well?

Orca Browser is in Compact Mode in your screenshot. You can turn it off under the View menu.

To access render engine font dialog (including sizing) enter this URL into the address bar:

Code: Select all

chrome://browser/content/preferences/fonts.xul

Thank you for the information. I discovered the use of "percentage" zoom control. However the effect of this lever seems not to work in a smooth progresssive zoom, but in big steps. In other words text changes size abruptly, mostly from a big size back to 100% (even moving the slider very slowly, to allow some time to react)

By the way, using Firefox and Orca , and speaking about layout :
To my taste, the fonts which I see on screen with Avant Browser look nicer.
In FF and Orca fonts look a bit fainted and smaller.

On my system, when switching from Windows XP to Linux Ubuntu, fonts are even worse.
So be it. I haven't that much time to keep me busy optimizing all details of software.

Articles discussing font rendering differences:

Why Is Internet Explorer’s Font Rendering So Much Better Than Firefox and Opera?
How to make font render smoothly in firefox just like safari and IE7

Avant is based on the Internet Explorer engine and Orca on the Firefox one.
Both articles recommend enabling Clear Type on your system since IE renders that way internally.

Thank you kudos for this most valuable information.
The cure appears to be very simple, which is not always the case.

Saddly I am using a CRT< and turning on Cleartype makes most text on my screen very difficult to read. However IE still seems to display fonts very clearly. Why can this cleartype patch not be used within Orca? Would this not be advantuous? Or are you not able to change the engine in any way?

Please read How to make font render smoothly in firefox just like safari and IE7 to learn how to turn ClearType system wide.
