mht files

Post by mathman » Thu Dec 02, 2010 3:03 am

.mht files are opened using a browser. I tried to open such a file with Orca (having set Orca as the default to open .mht) and it acted like the Srocerer's Apprentice! Specifically, it kept opening one tab after another, without actually opening the file itself, nonstop! After closing Orca, it restarted and continued opening these tabs. I was finally able to stop it by turning off the default option.

Mht files are archived webpage files.
Mozilla and subsequently Orca doesn't support them.
You can get a plugin
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MHTML#Firefox

(Havent tested this with orca myself)

I can open these files with Opera and (with some problem) IR8.

What extensions do you have installed? Tools >> Mozilla Addons >> Extensions

Real Player Browser Plugin.

Further note: I can open files in Avant. When I try to open in Firefox, it links to Opera.

I just installed the extension and it essentially resolved the problem. However, when opening a (particular) file in Orca, it was slightly messed up - using Opera gave the same slightly messed up result. Using Avant, the same file was opened cleanly, although it took much longer to open. Is there a connection between the speed and the quality ?

Can you post the mht file? You must remember that some sites are incompatible between IE and non-IE based browsers.

I would rather not - it happens to contain personal information. There is something paradoxical as far as this particular file is concerned. IE8 will load only a part of the file (possibly because of the personal information) with a message indicating that Javascript has to be enabled. In fact it is enabled. As I mentioned Avant is the only one of four browsers that opens it correctly. Opera and Orca will open up the full content, but with a slightly screwed up format.
