Can't save downloaded file

Post by selena » Wed Apr 01, 2009 11:03 pm

Hello :) !

I use Orca version 1.1 built 2 and I have a problem. When I want to save a file- orca download application opens and confirms that the file is downloaded but when I look in destination where the file is supposed to be saved - it misses...So, Orca can't save downloaded files - I've tried all types : mp3, exe, pcf , doc and so on. When I press the right button on the downloded file "open" option is grey (so it doesn't work at all
IE 8 , Avant (the latest version 11.7.23) & FF can download everything without any problem. Please help me- I really like to use Orca...
OS :VISTA Ultimate

Many thanks in advance and I hope my problem will be solved

Have you installed any extensions or addons? Check in Tools -> Mozilla Addons -> Extensions

Try going to about:config in the address bar and set browser.download.manager.useWindow to false (double-click it)

Use the OpenDownoad extension for this feature.

First, thank you for your prompt reply !

I set in config what you said but I have failed to install addon, I got this error (see in attachment)

"OpenDownload" will not be installed because it does not provide secure updates"

I use only proxyswitch extension... Could you make a screenshot of your config options or tell me how to set them to default? Maybe it can help ?

Oops, wrong link - use this one

To set all options to default: Delete folder "%appdata%\Orca Profiles\.default"
This will completely reset Orca and remove extensions too.

I set all options to default, and I downloaded the addon you suggested. But problem is still here: it can't save any file & filetypes...And open is grey...I have no idea what is wrong ...

Do you have an anti-virus program running? Maybe it is being blocked/scanned.
Just for a test, can you try Orca Portable version.

How very strange - are you sure that you deleted "%appdata%\Orca Profiles\.default"?

Hello, I have a similar problem (or maybe it's the same...).

Sometimes when I'm downloading a file (mostly .exe type) the download finishes but then I get an error like this:

Image

To be honest... I haven't try to change the save location of my downloads, I want them on my desktop! :problem:

So when I get that error, I look at the desktop and rename the file (I remove the ".part" string and then the file works ok). :?:

I'm using Orca 1.2 build 2 and Windows 7 RC build 7229 (x86/32bit) so maybe that's the problem but... in the other hand... I also use other browsers (such as FireFox, Safari, Chrome, etc.) and I don't have that problem with any of them.

Thanks in advance and sorry about my english, I'm from Argentina.

Ok, looks like I'm invisible... :problem:

Anyway... I'm using Windows 7 RTM (build 7600) and Orca 1.2 (build 2) since yesterday and it seems to work fine now, so... problem solved... I guess. :?:

From what I gather, NightBrowser, Orca seems to have writing privileges to your Desktop (folder) but can't change stuff already written there. That could be the result of a weird system policy, and since you're using Windows 7, I (and I guess the rest of the smallish Orca community) can't offer much help, I'm still on XP.

Google around for similar problem reports unrelated to Orca -- they might help.

Pnin, thanks for the reply, but like I said in the previous post, I'm using a newer version of Windows 7 (RTM now vs. RC 7229 before) with the same version of Orca (latest one... 1.2.2) since a few days, and it's working fine now, so I would say that the problem is "solved".

I found a reference to the .exe download problem in the MozillaZine Knowledge Base:
Temporarily disable antivirus or update security software

<filename> could not be saved, because an unknown error occurred. Try saving to a different location.

You may see the above message when you click a link to download an executable (.exe) file. This problem can be caused by a conflict with your antivirus scanner and a firewall product such as Comodo Firewall.

Some firewalls continue to be active when disabled in the user interface, so disabling the firewall may be ineffective. As a workaround, temporarily disable your resident antivirus scanner when downloading an executable file, then re-enable it when the download is complete.

Disable virus scanning in Firefox preferences - Windows

Starting in Firefox 3, Firefox launches your installed anti-virus program to scan files when the download completes. In some cases, this causes a substantial delay. In other cases, the file is not saved after the scan completes. You can disable this feature by setting the preference browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone to false in about:config. Note: If the Download Manager appears to be stuck scanning for viruses, try closing and re-opening the Downloads window instead of disabling the preference.
Could it be that you have changed anti-virus settings or firewall rules since upgrading?

Mmmm... I used to use AVG Free with all the Win7 beta and RC versions that I have tested and then in build 7229 I change to MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials). I can't remember if that was the same time when I started to have problems with Orca... but now with Win7 RTM I'm still using MSE and it works fine.

I also have been using Spybot S&D (since WinXP... jaja).

And no... I didn't change anti-virus settings neither firewall rules.

I don't think it was a Firefox engine issue... remember that I say that I was also using other browsers (Opera 10, Safari 4, Chrome 2/3, IE8 and Firefox 3.0/3.5) (and I'm still using them) and none of those where having problems with the downloads.

I think it was just a "misunderstood" between my Win7 build 7229 and Orca... notice that when I installed build 7229, it wasn't a "clean install", it was an upgrade from an older Win7 build which was an upgrade from another Win7 build if I remember well.

Since you upgraded between builds of Win 7, that probably caused the issues. Some weird things could happen since they aren't officially supported, nor tested much.
