Streaming video capture

Post by mathman » Mon Feb 22, 2010 8:36 pm

Firefox has the facility to use Realplayer to capture streaming videos. Orca does not. Is there any possibility that this feature could be added to Orca?

I happen to be a browser collector. The following allow streaming video capture by Realplayer: IE8, Avant, Firefox, Chrome. The following do not: Opera, Orca.

If you can do it with Firefox, you can generally do it with Orca. Please post step-by-step instructions for how it works in Firefox and I shall check it.

I use the DownloadHelper extension: http://www.downloadhelper.net/

It is essentially automatic. When a streaming video is playing a little banner shows up on the top edge of the image which essentially instructs you to click on it if you want to use realplayer to download the video. In addition if you right click on the video, you will get a set of options, one of which is download with realplayer. When you right click on the video in Orca, you also get a set of options, but realplayer download is not one of them.

One of the requirements is that realplayer has to be set to include the option. To do this click on Tools, then Preferences, then Download and recording. There will a box to check if you want this option. Included is a list of browsers that are supported: Firefox, IE, and Chrome. Note that Avant is not on the list, but it works, presumably through IE. Orca should be made to work through firefox.

I just studied what happens during the RealPlayer setup. The RealPlayer setup program fails to detect Orca as a Mozilla/Firefox based browser and does not update a file. You can do this manually:

Close Orca then go to: Start >> Run and type in (including the quotes):

Code: Select all

notepad "%appdata%\Orca Profiles\.default\mozdata\UserData\extensions.ini"
In the file that opens you will notice an ExtensionDirs section:

Code: Select all

[ExtensionDirs]
Extension0=C:\....
Extension1=C:\....
Extension2=C:\....
Add a new line:

Code: Select all

ExtensionX=C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Real\RealPlayer\BrowserRecordPlugin\Firefox\Ext
Where ExtensionX is the next sequential number, ie Extension4

Restart Orca and it should now work.

If your system is not WinXP then the above path may be incorrect. If so, then examine the named file extensions.ini in your Firefox profile folder.

I followed the instructions (with X replaced by 1) and also a restart, but it didn't work! My system is windows XP.

I have also been in contact with Avant support via email (sword) about a different matter, but it could be related. It has to do with an email warning message. The message (having to do with security) is the same for both Avant and IE. Firefox also has a warning message with different wording, but there is no message at all in Orca.

That's odd - it worked perfectly for me. I went to youtube and when I played a video there was a download symbol at the top right.

Did you check if the path was correct and matched the one from Firefox?
Would you mind posting the contents of extensions.ini for both Orca and Firefox.

[from Orca]
[ExtensionDirs]
[ThemeDirs]
Extension0=C:\Program Files\Orca Browser\extensions\{972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd}
Extension1=C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Real\RealPlayer\BrowserRecordPlugin\Firefox\Ext

[from firefox - 1/26/2010]
[ExtensionDirs]
Extension0=C:\Documents and Settings\Herb\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\mfnimi9m.Default User\extensions\{3112ca9c-de6d-4884-a869-9855de68056c}
Extension1=C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\extensions\{CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0004-ABCDEFFEDCBA}
Extension2=C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\extensions\{CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0017-ABCDEFFEDCBA}
Extension3=C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\lib\deploy\jqs\ff
Extension4=C:\Documents and Settings\Herb\Application Data\Move Networks
Extension5=c:\program files\real\realplayer\browserrecord\firefox\ext

[from firefox - 8/31/2006]
[ExtensionDirs]
[ThemeDirs]
Extension0=C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\extensions\{972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd}

I have no idea what they do or why I have two from firefox, although I have had many updates and installations, so the old one may be left over. The new one seems to coincide with firefox 3.6 installation.

No - you added it to the ThemeDirs section instead of the ExtensionDirs section.
This is how it should be:

Code: Select all

[ExtensionDirs]
Extension0=c:\program files\real\realplayer\browserrecord\firefox\ext
[ThemeDirs]
Extension0=C:\Program Files\Orca Browser\extensions\{972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd}

It finally worked. If you take a look at the original suggestion (reply #4), you will see what happened.

I guess that you missed the bit about the ExtensionDirs section and just added the line to the end of the file.

Was your other issue with sword resolved?

I just checked. The other issue has not been resolved. To me it is not critical, since it is a warning I always ignore, but it could be important to some people.

Bear in mind that sword is in China and there is a time difference. If you require further support here then by all means start a new topic.
