How to install missing plugins in Orca?

Post by Dreamer » Thu Apr 16, 2009 3:43 pm

On this page I tried to install missing plugins, but it doesn't work.

http://www.gamenext.co.uk/category.htm? ... menu_multi

There is a guide how to install it, here is the screenshot:

Image

...but when I click the "Install missing plugins" button, no window appear. Is it a bug, or do I need to do something else? Flash is enabled and I also tried to disable the AD blocker and pop-up blocker.

The plugin is Oberon Game Host

I cannot install it with Firefox 3.0.7/8 so that explains why I cannot with Orca either.

So it's a Firefox bug?

According to the Firefox addon page, the developer (Oberon Media) comments says "Version 1.0.5.1116 of the Oberon Game Host supports FF 3.0.1."

Since Orca 1.1 uses Firefox 3.0.7, this would seem like an incompatibility, and so would make it a plugin bug. The bug is with the plugin developer and they should be contacted regarding any issues (ie. Oberon Media, Support@Oberon-Media.com, http://www.oberon-media.com/channels/wi ... ChannelID= )

After all, in general, there is really *no* expectation that any plugins for Firefox will work with Orca (nor any expectations that any plugins for IE will work with Avant). That's why they are called plugins for *Firefox* and for *IE*. If those plugins were designed for and/or tested with the purpose of working with Orca and/or Avant, then they would also be called plugins for Orca and/or Avant. But, as far as I know, there are no such plugins that have been written for or tested for Orca or Avant. Using any plugins designed for other browsers is always a use at your own risk thing anyway.

And really, that includes all the lists of "plugins that work for Orca and/or Avant". Certainly many plugins have been tested and do work with Orca/Avant, and Andersen puts in alot of effort into making Orca/Avant work with plugins, but that is certainly the wrong way around to do this. Neither Andersen nor Orca nor Avant can provide any true "support" for plugins that are written by a third-party developer. That's why plugin issues need to be sent to the original plugin developer.

The problem with the online TV site (http://video.markiza.sk/live-tv) is the same type of problem, just with a different plugin. This time the plugin is Windows Media Player and the developer is Microsoft. So support requests for Windows Media Player and browser support really needs to go to Microsoft.

As far as I know, Windows Media Player support with Firefox is a crapshoot at best; and may or may not work depending on a host of conditions, and not just solely the configuration of a user's computer. There's supposed to be some sort of WMP plugin for Firefox, and that doesn't seem entirely perfect for FF either, and it depends heavily on the cooperation, input, and help from Microsoft developers, and the MS developers are definitely *not* keen on really wanting to make WMP work nicely in FF. For a start, see: http://www.google.com/search?q=firefox+ ... dia+player

And again, if such a plugin works with Orca, again it's use at your own risk. I've certainly seen nothing about WMP support for Orca. At least I think WMP works much better for IE/Trident based Avant.

See this post - copy the file to the Orca Plugins folder then restart Orca.

Sorry for the late reply, but I'm a bit busy. It should be working, archive is working, but I couldn't test live TV yet, not everything is available live. I'll let you know if it's working, later.

Thank you again, Kudos! I would be totally lost without you.

You deserve more stars than me. ;)

Looks like the live-tv stream is unavailable - you can try it by opening the URL (http://195.168.10.72/live) directly in Windows Media Player.

(Thanks for your kind words, I have also been busy/offline this past week so sorry for delays)

Live TV is unavailable for non-Slovak movies and series, they don't have the rights to broadcast it outside the country, but I tried it today and it works partially - picture is smaller than in Avant, but with 200% option it's OK, another issue is that video is not deinterlaced.

If you'd like to test it, video should be available weekdays at 6AM, 5PM, 7PM CET .

Right-click the video then select Options >> Advanced to access the WMP settings dialog so you can change or compare with Avant/IE.

I have checked those options before, but I didn't find "Advanced" options (if you mean exactly this term), there are only 3 tabs - Performance, Plug-ins, Network - and all options are the same in both browsers.

I tried to open that page in Avant, then in Orca and it works good now, 200% option is still needed, but the video is deinterlaced now also in Orca. Perhaps it's (a hidden) auto-update, or it works because I opened the page first in Avant, don't know, but with 200% option the video quality is the same in Avant and Orca! So another thank you, Kudos. :)

I tried every option in the context menu, but I don't have the "Advanced" button in options dialog. Perhaps it's OS related, it looks you're using Win XP, right?

OK, so the problem with not de-interfaced video is still present in Orca 1.1 build 3. I found only one solution / workaround - open http://video.markiza.sk/live-tv in Avant, then open the same site in Orca, close Avant - then video is deinterlaced in Orca. This is quite annoying, since I have to always open the site in Avant first, so if you have a solution, or at least a better workaround, please let me know. Thanks.

Don't know, but I'm not able to test it now. I'll try to make a screenshot tomorrow.

Strange, now I am sure I didn't start Avant today and it works even in Orca. Perhaps it's a codec issue, or some player must be started, don't know.

I'll try again with Orca and FF later...
