Frequent freezing

Post by pincopallino » Fri Feb 07, 2014 4:49 pm

I am experiencing frequent "freezing" of AB: scroll bar stops responding, if I click on the active tab, Windows says AB is no longer responding and there is nothing I can do but terminate it. Today it happened already three times.
Is there any crash inspector or other tool one may use to send a more detailed feedback? I have no record of what happens.

Is it related with the page you visited?
Do you use any extension under firefox engine? Disabling all of them makes any difference?

No, it happens on different pages. Quite often on newspaper sites, though, like http://www.lefigaro.fr and http://www.lestrepublicain.fr

In one PC I had installed the User Agent tweaker (or whatever it is called...) on the other PC nothing at all - apart from dictionaries. And the freezing is not limited to one PC.
Is there any utility extension one may us to monitor what's wrong?

No such a tool currently.
I tried for a while, it happened once. We'll try to improve it in later versions.

I'm using winXP so I doubt we have identical causes, but I have been seeing the freezing as well. It would happen once a day roughly and the only answer was a reboot because it REALLY screws up the system.

I found two things helpful. First, start task manager, sort by CPU usage so that the most active process is at the top. I found that an extra avant.exe process had been started and it was consuming 99% CPU. Closing the browser did NOT stop it and using task manager to kill the second avant.exe only screwed up the system even more. Second, go look at the event viewer. Probably you will see some entries for Avant hanging and then there MAY be other errors at the same that may give a clue. In my case, nVidia nView was experiencing many errors and disabling it solved my problems.

It keeps on freezing several times a day. No extensions at all on this PC. It's really painful.... #-o

Does the new page show blank when Avant freezes? Can you minimize Avant when it freezes?

Nope, it fades away.
xiaobing wrote:Can you minimize Avant when it freezes?
Cannot do anything. Just click on the active tab and I get a message saying AB stopped responding and I asking whether I want to terminate it. If I say no, nothing happens. If I say yes, AB is "killed" and when I restart it the previously open tabs are proposed for re-open.

Furthermore, when I get a purple window, I cannot close the tab, nor restart it. It stays there until I close the browser. Which, by the way, froze while I was writing this reply!! [-X

Hello,

I have the same problem for a long time.
I don't know the reason but since I installed Adblock Plus for IE Browser everything works fine.
Only drawback: Avant Downloader doesn't activate automatically

Have a good day !

(AB Ultimate 2014 build 1 - usually I use IE11 Standards Mode as Default rendering engine)

Sorry for being insistent but AB freezes 4-5 times a day. No extensions, just dictionaries. It seems the when a page takes time loading, AB freezes, but I do not have a real statistic.
I am using Gecko, I would like to try the other engines to see whether the same problem occurs but I need dictionaries (spell checkers) does somebody know where to get them for Chrome and IE? Sorry, I have no experience with these and I do not see any "spell check" when I right-click a text box.

I am experiencing the same problem, and have complained about it in the past - without any real solution.

As other members have noted, unless Anderson put some efforts into solving Avant's basic problems (freezing, focus, favicons etc)- this browser is unfortunately, doomed.

I really want Avant to be my browser of choice but I find myself using other browsers more due to its problems. Pity.

Well, I tried hard but at this point I have to move to another browser. Freezing, purple windows which do not close, and that occurs 5-10 times a day. It's really too much. AB is unfortunately too unstable. Pity, because it is really very well designed.
I hope that a future version will be more usable. Meanwhile, I wish you success and prosperity but I suggest that you devote your resources first of all on the stability issues.

Is there any improvement in 2014 build 2? We just fixed some problems that may cause crash in this version.

As I said, 5-10 freezing or purple pages which do not close per day. If anything, it seems worse than before, certainly not an improvement.

Hi,

I have the same dilemma, freezing and many purple screens all 5 Minutes,
over most of my machines. All with WIN7-64, Prof. and Home Prem, IE11 only-Versions
(XP seems OK)
I have have to kill/restart the avanttask in most times, sometimes I am able to stop/restart
normally, but purple screens appear 5 Minutes later.

I go back to 2014 Buil 1 now because no work is possible, spending my whole day with avant.
Hope that helps.
All PCs are clean, NO special tools or anything, no bockers, additional firewalls or anything.
Problems on all machines came up immediatly with 2014-Build 2

Ralf

We'll try to improve it, but I'm not sure whether it can be fixed completely.
