Download Manager stuck scanning for viruses

Post by notestracker » Sun Dec 18, 2011 1:15 am

I'm using Avant Ultimate 2012 in Firefox rendering mode. With build 8 (and previous builds) sometimes the Download Manager window gets stuck at the Scanning for viruses... stage.

In such cases the download seems always to go to completion, but I have to click on the Clear list button or close the Download Manager window to get rid of the constantly-running Scanning for Viruses line, instead of the virus scanning stopping automatically. (I'm using MSE -- Microsoft Security Essentials -- always kept up to date.) Many or most downloads under Avant don't get stuck at this virus scanning stage, and downloads in Firefox never do.

I did a forum search and the only reference I found in some way related to issues with virus scanning is at http://forum.avantbrowser.com/viewtopic ... es#p160923 but I never have problems with downloads failing to complete.

Any ideas/comments/tips?

Download from webpages or emails?
Downloading attachments from email often has the option to scan for viruses as I know.

Ni hao, Xiaobing!
I don't access any of my mail via a browser interface (have been using Eudora mail client since around 1993 to do that, in Windows outside any web browser).

As mentioned, I use Microsoft Security Essentials. I don't interfere with with MSE default settings, including the "real-time protection:

curs when I download Microsoft Security Essentials - default settings for real-time protection
The problem only occurs on some occasions, perhaps one download out of every 20 or so, when I download files from the Web. It's an irritation, something I'd like to understand and eliminate, and not a major problem.

I haven't worked out a pattern, hence am asking for any insights as for what could cause such behavior. I download lots of files, and many of them don't run into this problem and remain puzzled as to why some do while many don't.

How to stop Firefox Download Manager scanning for viruses

Post by notestracker » Fri Dec 30, 2011 3:35 am

Finally reaching my frustration, I did a simple search and found a resolution that should remove the irritation, refer to http://www.mysysadmintips.com/clients/1 ... ad-manager

To disable the Scanning for Viruses feature in Download Manager (Firefox mode), do the following:
  • 1. Open Avant Ultimate 2012 (Firefox mode) and type about:config in the address bar
    2. Locate the configuration entry browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone and change its value to false by double-clicking it
Note that if, like myself, you are also using Firefox Browser proper, you must repeat the above steps inside Firefox.

NOTE: I'm assuming that MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) real-time protection will still scan all downloads!

Well, in my first follow-up test the above step at least did away with the never-ending "Scanning for Viruses" message, however in this initial test (saving a web page in MHT format) it left the message "Unknown time remaining" sitting there indefinitely, so I still have to click the "Clear List" button to get rid of it. Hmm... More research needed!

Good question, I suppose.
I don't really know, but it's whatever downloader comes with Firefox rendering mode.
It seems to be Firefox downloader, because when I switched off virus scanning using about:config -- which, of course, is the Firefox way of doing things -- then for sure the virus scanning function did disappear from the Download Manager dialog.

From that it seems to me that it's the Firefox download manager. But I certainly stand to be corrected by somebody who knows how Firefox rendering mode in Avant Ultimate 2012 operates internally. Would somebody in the development team (Xiaobing, Jasmine, Anderson, or whoever) please shed light on this?
