[Release] Add To Bookmarks button

Post by Scrabble » Sat Dec 02, 2006 5:41 am

You can create a button to add a website to your Bookmarks with a press of a button by going to Tools...Avant Browser Options...Add-Ons...Add-Ons. Then click add, give it a name, select an icon to identify it, make sure for "Type" that the 'Script Button' is selected, then paste the text below into the 'Content' field:

javascript:window.external.addFavorite('http://www.website.com','');

Hello,
Thanks,but your code will add http://www.website.com to bookmark.
The correct code is :

Code: Select all

javascript:window.external.addFavorite(location.href,'');
But nice idea anyway. :-)

I did not get that - when I hit the icon to add to Bookmarks, it would come up with a blank line for me to give it a title. I updated my script to what you said and it did the same. Thanks for the correction.

Does this work for AB bookmarks or only IE favorites?

Yes, it works for AB Bookmarks. I don't use IE Favorites.

Is it not working for you, bigC? Not to hi-jack the thread, but when I tried it at my office, it brought up IE's favorites... but when I created the button, I used abfan's.

I just tried it at home with Scrabble's and it's using Avant's. So, I changed it to abfan's and it's still bringing up Avant's.

I don't have Avant renamed at either location.

I don't have time to test it, but it makes me wonder if the button isn't recognizing an edit to the code until you restart Avant or something. Either way, it's weird.

I logged in, though, to suggest to Scrabble that you export it on your system and upload this to our downloads area.

Just to clarify the previous posts and also to add a modification/alternative:

window.external.addFavorite(location.href,'');

The script above opens the 'New Bookmarks' window with nothing in the name field.

The script below opens the 'New Bookmarks' window with the page title in the name field.

window.external.AddFavorite(location.href, document.title);

If you don't have any icons available to assign to this script, I suggest downloading EasyPicture2Icon to create them. It's free.

Help! I've followed this exactly (2nd option) but no button appears. Should this still work with the latest Avant ie 11.7 (35)? I even tried inserting the 'javascript:' mentioned in the original post but still nothing happened.

What am i doing wrong please?

V

PS Is there a reason why a 'New Bookmark' button isn't available as standard? I would have thought it would be very popular with users.

Yes, it works in the latest build of Avant (not working for Orca though).
Make sure that the addon is enabled - ie it has a tick in the box.
You also need to enable the addon buttons bar: View >> Toolbars >> Add-on Buttons

Here is the button code which you can just import into Avant.

Very many thanks for that. I had missed enabling the appropriate toolbar - Doh!

Presumably one can't move the button to any of the other toolbars?

Will it become standard one day?

Don't you hate it when that happens?

Your guess is as good as anybody's - except Anderson's!
