Ignore thread?

Post by SweetLou » Wed Feb 04, 2004 8:11 am

Didn't know where to post this thread, so I am doing it here. Is there a way to ignore a thread? In particular, I don't want to know when the word association thread is updated. I hate thinking there is a new message and clicking to discover it is just the word association thread. If there is no way to do this, then this thread is in the correct area because I want to request that.

I don't believe that there is a way to do this other than to go to that Topic Section & if not of interest to you click mark as read when you finish the posts that do interest you.

That would require some major re-coding from the guys at phpBB and I seriously doubt it is something they would think of introducing.

I like this request. Some time I don't care about a new post in word association but that new post image bugs me so I have to click on it just to get it to disappear. I know I could just click Mark All As Read but I always wonder if someone posted something that I'll miss when I click it.

I always leave check all as read as last resort & try to read the ones of interest 1st.
Lately they have been posting faster than I can get to. I loose them when dang thing crashes/closes due to something & then can't remeber where I was as none are marked as new any longer . :( :?

Yeah, that is why I don't want to use the mark all read, kind of worried someone would post something I would want to see just before I click the link. Also, that would change the icon for me, it would not stop me from going to that section to see if it was something else besides the word association thread.

Which bring us back to the Keep Unread Posts mod that we have been trying to get Mariuz to install. Sometime when reading posts that say this site crashed Avant for me and you go to check it out and yep Avant crashes and then you have to try and read the post by the time instead of the unread icon which can be a major pain. But I digress and SweetLou is right, have to check the off topic thread in case it's something besides word association and usually it's not and a waste of time especially when you're on dial-up.

Oh, that is right, I forgot about testing bugs and having Avant crash and losing the icons to tell us what is new. I usually go by the time the last post was posted. Takes time and is a pain.

Edited: Oops, must be getting late, basically said same thing Logan did.

Now someone started a "two word story" thread. I really would like to see this "ignore thread" included. If at all possible, it would be greatly appreciated.

This is going to be closed. One was started a long time ago and was shutdown.

There was one that was very similar. I'm not 100% sure it was locked but it was ignored.

Ignoring it is more appropriate than locking it. If you don't want to play you don't have to, nobody does.

Oh, I know Sara. I would never say to block it, people here seem to enjoy it. It is just something that I don't care about and like I said above, I hate coming to "Off Topic" just to find it was the two games. I do like going to the Off Topic area because there are many other threads in there that I do like. A forum that I used to go to has this option of ignoring a thread, so we don't get notified that it is updated and don't have to go clicking to discover it was something we don't care about. I'm not sure how it is done, I suspect it is something in the cookie for the site.

OK to set things straight there was another 2 word story post awhile ago and when I was cleaning out some old and useless posts I deleted it as it was wasting space IMO and no one besides the original poster had replied. As to locking the thread I see no reason as to why if people want to play let them. This is the off-topic thread after all and a couple of games to play helps to relieve stress sometimes. The same thing could be said of "Hit the Penquin" BTW.

I'm sorry, I just re-read the last couple of posts from Drrae and Sara. I thought they were talking about locking this thread, not the thread of the two word story. Maybe that is where the confusion lays about searching and not finding. I agree with Logan that it should be allowed to continue in the Off Topic section. What I was suggesting is that members have the ability to make an option to ignore threads. What I mean is that when coming to the forum, if you have x thread as ignored, the forum will not show a "new message" icon for x thread. Does this make sense? Just like the forum tells us what is new, if what is new is the "ignored" thread, then the icon will not show a new message icon. I know this is possible on other forums, not sure if this forum's software has that function or not. I would just like it because though others enjoy these threads, I do not. Yet, I have to come check in the Off Topic section to make sure the new message it isn't in one of the other threads that I do want to read. Basically not having the ignore thread option is a waste of time and bandwidth.

I like Lou's idea & it should be put to Mariuz to see if it can be done, but the forum #1 change to be added should be the moderator that prevents the unreads being marked as read if your sys crashes, gets disconected, or the tab gets closed accedentally.
I really really hate that!
