Try YabbSE ;)

Post by klumy » Thu May 29, 2003 1:21 am

Hi,

Just an idea.
You should upgrade your forum to YabbSE. It's based on MySQL and it's pretty fast.

It also has a lot of Options/Modifications. The YabbSE community is very active  :D

Upgrading to YabbSE could also help to reduce traffic amount to about 40-50%.

But if it's technically not possible to upgrade to SE, you should update the forum to the current version of YabbGold 1.0 SP 1.3.1, which contains a lot of bugfixes !!

My thought is 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it'  ;D

I agree that the forum programs you two are suggesting are better than what is currently used in regards to the technical advancements (speed, options, etc) and such.

However, if a current system is working fine and nobody has problems with it, why the change?  This isn't like Win95 to WinXP, 95 is mostly obsolete and can't handle quite a bit of stuff out there.  But the current forum seems to handle everyone okay and is fast enough for me.

Not trying to shoot down your idea ;) but the possible complications of upgrading makes it seem not worth it to me.

Course, it I started a NEW forum, I would definetly use YabbSE (MySQL!!!)

MTC.
....what smells like blue !?!

You also have to consider the issue of loosing what posts we do have.. unless you can import all the old stuff into a new board.. it is quite painfull to retype it all back in  ;)

And the person sugesting the switch would have to do all that typing  ;D

Well, there are several 100% working convertors from YabbGold -> YabbSE

You can find them here.

I suggest another two great forum software:

1. phpBB (http://www.phpbb.com/)
2. Invision Power Board (http://www.invisionboard.com)

There are both free, feature-rich, and have converting tools for the existing YaBB. Moreover they are much faster then YaBB, because they are written in PHP/MySQL.

100% agree
A PHP/MySQL would be much faster ;)

i just have to say, phpBB rules! I use it on my site. It's very simple for the user, but provides a ton of options for the admin. Also supports themes which can be choosable by the user (i mean the user can choose which one he/she wants to use), or you can set a theme that will never be overridden by the user.

sorry, just had to say that. did i mention theres a lot of mods out for it and it looks cooler? haha

(sorry for my bad spelling, ive been out of school for too long hahaha)

you should also have a look at SMF. It's the successor of YabbSE and converting from YabbGold to SMF should be easy with the provided converter.

Just an FYI ...

I am currently using both the SQL and CGI versions of YaBB.  Both are great - completely customizable, tons of mods available, etc.

However ... I had nothing but problems when I tried to convert my CGI version to a SQL version.  I even used one of those "100% working" porters.  People's profiles got messed up and posts were lost ... some were there but coudldn't be read.  Thankfully I had a full backup of the CGI version and simply restored it.

I have to agree ... if it ain't broke, don't fix it.  As far as simply upgrading this version to 1.3.1, well ... 1.3.1 doesn't have all of the mods updated yet, so if there are ANY mods on this boards, they might lose info.  It's just not worth it unless you are running a tiny board or until the mods are all updated.
