Politeness and courtesy

Post by striver » Wed Jul 07, 2010 6:09 pm

I cannot reply to the topic raised by Circumlocutus in Announcements because that topic is locked. I hope this place is not unacceptable for a comment on it. The sentiments expressed are wholly right and proper and get my unconditional endorsement.

Letting off steam is to be expected by users of software that changes, or maybe doesn't change as desired, and its very easy to go overboard a bit. That doesn't mean we should tolerate rudeness, arrogance, bossiness and so on. Maybe very occasionally from a frustrated and angry user, but never, ever from a moderator, no matter what the provocation. We can learn from other forums.

Look at the zhornsoftware forum to see how polite restraint in the face of outrageous posts wins the day every time. The tone on the AVG free forum has gained a reputation for being confrontational and that directly led me to move away from that software. Even a cursory check there will show that one or two moderators have created that tone. For moderators to behave like that is just not acceptable.

Only one reply was allowed to the original topic here, ironic since that is the source of some rather unpleasant responses over the last few months, showing steadily decreasing tolerance and increasing bossiness. The person concerned was recently accused of verbal diarrhoea and that description seems to describe the quantity and the quality of abuse directed at a poster.

I strongly suggest a few minutes spent on the two forums I have given as examples will help prevent this otherwise super place getting moderated to misery.

Well it's not limited to just users. Sometimes the staff is hostile as well.

Edit: Just want to make it clear that my post wasn't directed at anyone here at these forums.

Doesn't a double post make it like a double negative?

I must say the problems have been going on for sometime now.So i understand that people are upset. Also i believe they should be allowed to say that. But with some respect. So you people know you can use more than 1 browser do that and wait it is way less stressful for people with heart problems and the like. :)
