Allow me to write some remarks about http://www.avantbrowser.com

1. Some weeks ago, the website access was ok but the tab "forum" could not be accessed. I wrote an email (marked urgent) to Mr. Anderson ---> No reply. [-X

2. During previous days the website could not be accessed in any way. After trying for hours and checking numerous settings (even trying Ubuntu) I went to another (well known) famous forum to ask what was happening here. The collected information from this forum, confirmed that this site had be completely down for quite some time !

3. I understand that total crashes can happen to any webserver anywhere, but I was hoping ...
3.1 .... to read something here about this issue at this forum, soon after the repair but nobody reacted (AB seems to loose users and general attention)
3.2 .... the author of "The fastest browser in the world" to answer faster to urgent emails
3.3 ... the website homepage show an apology for the inconvenience caused by the crash.

4. If all this happened because of a planned major maintenance or replacement of hardware, let me say that I didn't notice any warnings. Anyway a "maintenance" page would have been displayed as I would imagine.

The downtime was caused by HTTP flooding attacks against the Avant Browser website which took the sites down completely. The site administrators have been working on the problems and I'm sure that they will comment further. Apologies for the inconvenience.

Let me start by saying that we don't owe you anything. We are providing a completely free service for a completely free piece of software. If you were paying for support and there is an uptime guarantee, then you would have a right to complain.

Now, we are sorry about the downtime and we hope to minimize it but downtime is just part of the game. It happens sometimes.

Let me answer that you are fully right and that I'm very well aware that you provide a free service. So you don't owe me anything.

I don't need also to take time to give any feedback ... UNLESS it is ONLY positive and that you like it (as I understand from your messsage) Let me also say that I hope users are still allowed to express their views. If you (as many others) consider all remarks and opinions, which that you don't like, as an offense or a complaint, let me explain something...

If anyone receives an unpleasant message, opinion or feelings expression from another person, the ONLY correct and best to handle this situation is to THANK the author for his feedback ... which allows to improve himself or a situation that should be improved. This I was expecting, rather than what you wrote in your latest post.

But anyway, THANK YOU for letting me know your own view. If I gave you the impression that I was "complaining", I'm sorry for giving that impression and maybe I should have another approach, to express the very same things.

Actually I was rather more "complaining" (if you like) about the absolute silence from Anderson on my email some weeks ago, as well as the disappointing silence on this website about the downtime (which indeed can happen, as I posted myself !)

I' will be 70 this month. My mother who desperately tried to educate me during a few years after the war (with poor results) , gave me a very interesting answer, which I never forgot (although 52 years ago) to one of my nasty questions.

- "Mother, should I answer this letter ?"
- "Yes Georges, somebody took some time and effort to write you a letter. Even if you don't like the contents, it's just normal and polite to answer. It is mandatory that ANY letter must receive an answer."

That being said, it doesn't mean that I don't appreciate the huge efforts made by yourself and Mr. Anderson. But : if we are allowed to write ONLY about positive stuff , BUT NEVER to express any negative remark, then I guess you are not allowing us to act as "real" forum friends, caring for a better forum.

Well said DrDrrae being a admin myself i am used to it by the the way i asked and was told. No dissrespect to Merel.However i mean just in general web sites that are free and freeware this means the staff does a ton of things behind the sceens and give you there free time. Now since this free the staff are regular people to so they must have a job to pay the bills eat .So with that being said they come home from work then devote there free time to us so once again No dissrespect to you Merel.As all freeware sites are run this way :) And man if you been in the game for 20 years or more things were way more diffacult to do what we do now

Well, Again, The downtime was totally unexpected. The servers were attacked (Look here for more) and I'm sure that the forum staff worked hard to restore access to the forum and the website. The forum's staff is not getting paid. They're volunteers and I'm quite sure that they're also having a job and a lot of other things. So maybe they've had no time to post updates here.

Merel, I think DrDrrae was slightly offended by your post, likewise you were offended by his response. Although we are in complete agreement with what he said, I think his response was slightly harsh. So I'll try not to be very harsh...

That being said, you need to remember that he is an admin. I don't know if you've ever had to do the type of job he does, but it can be overwhelming sometimes, and it can get very annoying and frustrating; reading post after post, so much as implying that Anderson owes anything to anyone else.

About the matter for your note to Anderson; I personally believe it isn't polite to assume someone has the same set of morals that you do. You don't have to agree with that, but you should realize some people just don't see it necessary to reply to every single letter they get. Just saying that sounds kinda wrong, yes, but do you have any idea how many letters Anderson gets a day? I don't, but I do know that when email adresses are made public on a popular site... It's not pretty.

I also believe it is polite to consider the fact that Anderson is a working man. Consider the fact that he works on Avant Browser, for us, with what little spare time he has. So I'll just add, I also believe it is not polite to complain about something so little as a letter response.

I'm also being somewhat of a hipocrit, believing it is just plain rude to instruct others about their own moral values. However I just felt the need to do so, since you are doing the same. Generally speaking, I guess I'm just not a very polite person.

Some that earn their daily crust at the keyboard are apt to take their break with a coffee and a stroll outside for a smoke. Others Minimise or Save and click on Internet Hearts/Solitere/Pinball and the like.
Maybe there are 1 or 2 who like perhaps just one game but prefer, as i do, to open Avant Forum and have a nice relaxing read courtesy of the Admin`s Mod`s Support Staff etc. Recently the board was down, here we had run out of coffee, the doorway was crowded with smokers-it being raining. l suffered a D.o.R(denial of relaxation). As doubtless were the Ad`s Mod`s and Supp`s working to get the forum firing on all cylinders again. Thank you, Gentlemen. Your work is appreciated.
