Registration/Log In Issues - Post Here!

Post by hornakapopolis » Sun Oct 01, 2006 12:13 pm

Due to the influx of guests posting browser issues in this forum, we've turned off the ability for guests to start their own threads. Please register if you have questions about Avant or Orca :!:

If you are having problems logging in or haven't received your confirmation e-mail, please reply in this thread.

When replying, include your username and your e-mail without the domain. (i.e. If my e-mail address is hornakapopolis@hornakapopolisisthecoolestguyintheworld.gov, I'll just leave hornakapopolis) We don't want everyone in the world getting your e-mail address.

Last week I'd like to report an Avant Browser problem to this community. After submitting my registration I was informed my email address would be banned. Registration was refused therefore.

Huh?! What does that mean? I'd never done something wrong (like spamming, etc.), neither with this forum, Avant Browser, its developers nor anybody else.

Since there seems to be no German Avant Browser forum where I could register instead (I'm from Germany), I guess this was not a misleading error message.

So, I'd appreciate a serious explanation for this event.

Some e-mail addresses such as *@mail.ru, have been banned as they are typically used by spammers.

Generally, an e-mail domain will not be banned unless it has been used on several occasions by a spammer (obviously excluding the likes of hotmail, msn, gmail etc).

If you can give me your e-mails domain (not the actual e-mail address as we don't want spammers spiders picking it up, just the domain (i.e. gawab.com)), I'll look into it for you.

Pretty strict rules there... Really didn't expect that...

But now I do understand why 'web.de' was rejected for domain reasons. As a free mail provider, they're sometimes misused for spamming despite the fact that years ago they had a registering procedure I would designate as significantly more secure than others.

However, would 't-online.de' be okay instead? Got another account there but don't use it too often since the big fat German market leader is incredibly slow in forwarding emails, unlike 'web.de'.

t-online.de is fine (I've checked the ban list and that domain is not on it) :)

My apologies for any inconvenience.

No problem, Steven. Your intention behind fending off possible spammers is absolutely legitimate and I do fully agree with that.

If you'll read up a few post you'll see that *.ru is a favorite source of spmmers. Checking your IP addess tells me you've posted many, many times here before from other domains, so I'll let one of the Admiistrators decide what best here.

Sara :)

yes, you right, its realy hard for spammer to register and forget email out of ru zone? very strong protection.

my IP tells you nothing, its dynamic PPPoE.

Interesting, but mail.ru too not accepting mail from most n.america providers. due to spam.

can i ask why you need to validate my email? may be you collecting it for spamming or selling?

strange protections, everybosy can register 100 emails and register 100 times on forum.
(for every smart **** we can found bolt with left-handed thread)

i always include site name to email address for example i will register here with mail avant4575browser@ontario.ru and will find conformation code in trush folder.
all sites 'do not sell or spam' and 90% really do not sell or spam
(for every bolt with left-handed thread we can found **** with agnail)

Yeah, that's it. If that was anybody's actual reasoning, I doubt that they would actually then tell everyone.

As for the e-mail ban, someone added *@*.ru to the ban list. Definitely not the best of ideas. I removed that entry.

As for what we ban... like Mystery said above, we have enough problems with it, we'll ban it. Can people register practically everywhere? Yes... do spam bots take the time to do that? No. I'm curious how much you've been tracking our spamming issues to criticize how well they're working.

Could some things be done better? Sure, but this is a free board run by volunteers, so unlike a business who would create a model that would filter the bad from good more efficiently, we're in the situation of having to choose between being a little heavy handed in setting up our automatic defenses and having a few goods ones also get caught as opposed to spending most of our limited time removing spam... which is what I was doing a few months ago before I stopped visiting regularly.

I learn something new every day! Hornakapoplis tells me that when I check on a guest's IP it brings up all of the guest IPs, not just the one poster. You can imagine what I thought when I saw all of those postings!

Anyway, now that the banned list has been edited, I hope you were able to register!

Sara :D

Merel again

Please set account active

Hello Admins and Webmaster,
Please reactivate my username Merel. When registering my Profile change, some warning message appeared, telling that the account would become inactive, because capital changes had been. I changed my usual emailaddress to a new Microsoft hm address merel469@. But there was no email confirmation received at this new email address, neither at my old address, which is still in use. If you still have it, you may use it.

Is there another way (instead of posting here) to handle this kind of problems ? Thanks. Best regards,
Georges
