Since AVANT supports RSS FEEDS, why don't one of you admin/mods put one on this forum?

It is a very easy mod for phpbb forums. It takes about a minute according to the instructions.

Edit: Split from a previous topic and moved to Forum Suggestions instead of Avant Browser Discussion, since it had nothing to do with Avant Browser.

Then why have RSS in AVANT?

The RSS FEED is to save users time and bandwidth. They can tell from the feed if they want to visit the site and read the entire topic.

It would also save your web site bandwidth.

Why have RSS in Avant? Because people wanted it. I doubt that RSS would save bandwidth for the server, we would be sending out many feeds. I believe that the people who come here all the time, would still come no matter if we had RSS or not. For those that want to only come when something new is added to a topic, the forum has "Watch this topic for replies".
I still don't see the benifit of having it. If there was a great advantage, then I would consider modding the forum, but for the little benifit it would have, I don't think it is worth modding the forum.

Silly question, why do other forums have RSS? What exactly is RSS for anyway? Not trying to start an argument, just highly confused, although, it wouldn't take much.

It sounds like you are in favor of RSS when you state "Because people wanted it....we would be sending out many feeds".

It would seem the mods and admins would benefit the most from such a feed.

With RSS, you could set your feed to update every X minutes and just watch your open feed page in AVANT to see where you were needed next. There would be no need to constantly re-visit the index page and hit show posts since last visit. Doing that causes posts to be lost to you due to going back to the index.

In the end, you are the ADMINISTRATOR and are the one to make the decision. I just felt like it would be beneficial to you, your team of supporters and the forum users.

Thanks for the consideration.

No, I am not in favor of RSS in the forum. I said it was in Avant because people requested it in Avant Browser. I have no decision on what or what does not go into the program. I do use RSS for certain things.
How would the mods benifit from the RSS mod?
How are posts lost by going back to the index page?
As you said, users could decided how often to receive the feeds, I think this would cause a much greater use of bandwidth. Also, cause the server to work harder.

In simple terms, RSS is like CNN Headline News. You use a RSS reader, the "feeds" are sent to your client and you can read a brief description or part of the story, there is usually a link to go to the full story or topic.
It is a good way to get the headlines. For example, I have an RSS feed for The Extension Mirror's forums. This is a forum for Firefox and Thunderbird's extensions. I get the RSS to see if any new extension interests me, or if any of my extensions need to updated. If I see an extension that I might like, I click on the link to read the post.

Yeah, it's a good site. I use that way more than Mozilla's extension page

I actually just got into using RSS quite a bit. I've got it working on my phpBB board, and I love it. I love having the ability to add it to any news reader, and also have the ability for people to access the feed from anywhere.

RSS is becoming widely used. phpBB 3 I believe will have it built in.

So what are the chances of getting RSS feeds on this forum? Since I've found out about RSS its totally changed the way I use forums (I read a lot of them). I access nearly all my forum posts via RSS feeds now, and its really streamlined the way I keep up with whats happening on all the forums I read. After using forums with this ability, its not nice coming back to one without this feature.

I read higher up that some people don't see the point of RSS, fine, don't use them, why stop other people using what is a really useful feature. What harm will it do turning them on? The fact that lots of other forums use them suggests it’s a popular feature that people use (and I can see why now I use them), so please reconsider and give people the option.

At the very least why not see if users of the forum would be interested in having the OPTION of using them. Why not create a poll and pose the question to users of the forum?

Ta.

Because it's not a matter of "turning them on." The board must be modified. I wouldn't have a problem with it, but there are a few other things going on right now with Avant and the administration of the board... and just things I personally have going on.

There are other factors, too, but with the biggest being day to day priorities and keeping this forum easily updatable, everything doesn't get done immediately. Think of this not as a "No," but more of a "In the future if there's time, when there's time."

Cool, I can understand that. What I couldn't understand was "I don't see a need". When in fact lots of people use this forum and some of them may see a need. Thanks for the reply.

I have set up an RSS feed for Avant Release announcements here. You may use it if you want but just remember it could be delayed up to a couple of days after a new Avant release is posted although it shouldn't be delayed more than a couple of hours. I don't feel like making a backend for it so that other moderators here can update it so I'm the only one than can do so.

Edit: I've had nothing to do so I have started a backend and also changed the location of the feed. It's now: http://feeds.feedburner.com/avantreleases

Edit2: Sorry, I changed it twice but forgot to update it here. It's fixed now.
