Restore tabs with history after accidental close

Post by peetm » Thu May 20, 2004 10:48 am

Sometimes (quite often actually), I click a link in a page and Avant opens the link (of course) - now - I get so used to people specifying that the link (just clicked) should open a new page, that it always comes as a shock to me that, when I close the 'new' page, the original page has gone too.

In other words, the 'new' page had its taget set to be the same page as the old - and, when I closed it, I closed the old one too! Damn!!

So, suggestion - some hot key, whereby Avant would restore the page I just closed - c/w its navigation history - so I can just hit 'back'.

You can recover only the last page that you closed by going to File -> Open Recent. The last one you closed is on the top.

I wish that it saved the history of that tab but it doesn't.

If you want, I can move this to the requests section.

How about middle click empty space in tab bar to reload last closed tab. Of course some small space will have to be set aside in case you have tabs all the way across.

Back button for re-open last closed.

Post by dovestar » Thu May 15, 2008 8:39 am

I am forever closing tabs by mistake and having a re-open last closed button is really useful but when I close a tab I don't just loose the page I was looking at, I loose the ability to go back through the previous pages.

Obviously I know I can go to the browser history but as I regularly work with up to ten tabs at once the history gets difficult to work with.

My feature request is that the re-open last closed feature also restored that tab's history to the back button as well as the page.

So good, in fact, that it's been requested for years. ;)

I would support this request, too... but should I put it in the thread from the Requests List?

I've talked to the developer about this feature. I know it's the programmer's business to figure out how to do a function. I just want to clarify why it's been an unrealized request by now.Seems it's impossible to record the cookies corresponding to the desired urls.

Let's suppose the first step you log in a forum, the second an e-mail box,the third redirect to another website through clicking on a link from an e-mail you're reading and at last close the tab. Whether you could keep those original login status after unclosing the tab and going back is up to how the forum or mail program is designed. Avant couldn't save all those cookies for users. And also some sites keep from being opened up directly. It turns out this feature is uesless if Avant can't save those important status information. I see this function in Maxthon. I dont think it really made it.

So a better request might be a misc option for a confirmation box, when one tab tries to close another?

Why assume that everybody in the world is viewing pages in which they have to log in?

I've always got the feeling that many features of Avant have been added or changed due to how the developer browses and not necessarily due to requests. Which is his right, I'm not arguing that, but I think it makes it extremely easy to miss the mark quite a bit. (I always figured that he probably doesn't have his tabs at the bottom of the browser and that's why attaching the Management Bar to the Tabs Bar didn't seem completely ridiculous. I think a lot of people keep the tabs where they were when they first installed Avant. Just my opinion.)

To me, I thought that one of the greatest uses for a feature like this would be when you're researching something and have a lot of sites open, but then have to close out for some reason. In that case, the chances of you having places where you'd have to have cookies logging you in would be pretty slim. And a search would have the direct URL to the search, so it wouldn't be needed there, too.

Also, doesn't Firefox 3 do this? I don't use it, but I thought that that was one of the things I saw mentioned when a friend was installing it on her computer.

I agree with tuck.

Just save the URL history of a tab and nothing else.
Thanks Anderson for checking out my AB 11.0 feature request list,
now it's time to go on with 11.8:

Firefox does this, Opera does this, Maxthon does this, and I'm sure many other browsers do this. Why can't Avant do this? It works well most of the time and the few times when it doesn't, you just have to log back into said page. It's not too hard.

Hmmm... Just because every other browser does this, why does Avant have to do this? Personally, I open many tabs just to avoid the back button. How many people would actually, truely use this?

I accidentally close tabs all the time. Having the history saved in FF and Opera is a huge time saver and just makes sense.

Since other browsers have this feature it is just one reason to use browser X over browser Y.

Ok, for completeness and to save time, I think this request would be good.
I would also like to request a misc option to enable/disable this feature.

Actually, I just remembered something about Avant that's probably not normal, and might have something to do with the memory leaks.

It doesn't actually delete the cookies that are to be stored for one session, after closing a tab. Which means, Avant might not be properly removing the IE object from the program. I could be wrong, but I'll make a PHP script to test.

(example would be a cookie hold a PHP session ID)

I'm not quite sure how it works, but afaik when the IE object is closed, the cookies set for just one session should be deleted. This is not case for any browser including Avant, Maxthon, IE, Opera, or FF. So I must be wrong. Even closing all tabs for Avant will not touch the cookies.

The test script is located http://www.ww-designs.com/cookie_test.php.

Only when you completely restart any browser, will the cookies be reset/deleted.
