[Request] Application Toolbar

Post by Midnight Mick » Sun Feb 01, 2004 1:14 am

Hi. :)

New Avant User here and am very pleased with it (Ver 9.01) but have a request...

Is it possible to introduce an Application Toolbar/Launchbar that we could add Applications to (For instance ICQ/Yahoo Shortcuts, Notepad etc...)?

It seems such a shame for me to go elsewhere on my PC to start a Application I need whilst surfiong when I could have it all at hand.

Doesn't your Window's toolbar @ bottom of screen do that? I've placed shortcuts for all prgms. I want access to while surfing there or in startbar, or am I misunderstanding your request??

No, your not misunderstanding my request, but it still doesn't stop you using the Email launchbutton in Avant (Or any browser for that matter) even though I bet that is sitting on your toolbar? ;)

I just think it would be handy to put your "Web" programs in Avant. :)

Actually I don't use the one in Avant, as I have Web & Pop Email.
I guess that it could be added if enough users asked for it but do you want bloatware or a fast browser?

Re: Bloatware.
That would be down to each individual though if they wish to use it as it's only acting as a shortcut bar. If uses I would hardly say it was Bloatware, but if not then you could just as easily hide it similar to the "Links" bar.

But sure, it was only a suggestion. :)

Just as having a load of stuff loading with Windows is a bad idea, so is having too many items in the Quick launch area, as it takes resources away when booting and effectively, slows it down.

No, not having programs preloading, just having a shortcut launchbar is what I mean.
Nothing even loads until you click it (Shortcut).

I forget which program it was but, I used to have an application a few years ago that had a rather ditty little "shortcut manager"/launcher, that sat either above the taskbar, to the right/left of the screen, or at the top of the screen. Was only the size of the toolbar, and had various different sections for different catagories. (sort of like the Office one only a heck of alot better).

Lotus Smartsuite!...... thats the one. (knew I'd remember it)

You mean like the Utilities Bar/Utilities Button that MyIE2 has?

Yes, that would be great!

I love the way it lets you also specify whether a program can start & close with MyIE2, very handy!

This would be a nice addition to Avant.

In IE you can use the Links bar. All you have to do is find the executable in Windows Explorer, right click and drag to the Links folder and select "Create a Shortcut Here". It then appears in the Link toolbar and it can be used to launch the programme.
Now the rub...it doesn't seem to **** in Avant but I can't understand why. Does anyone have any ideas?

Yes, I know it doesn't work (Why, I don't know) but thought as a Newbie to this forum that others may know this already so didn't say but was suprised to find out that a Launchbar had not been created to use for other handy Web programs which we could specify. :)

I've actually successfully used "Links" for this.

It would be nice if "Links" were multi line like the Tab bar is when a line gets too full. Or at least make it an option.

Only a small number of my links are programs instead of URLs, but for things like FTP, it's there and it works.

Esteban: How do you get programmes to launch from the Links bar? I couldn't get it to work.

I'm guessing that you would place all the programs you want in a folder and make the folder a link. For instance, I have my Programs folder in my favorites and can launch any program within it when I open it. This will also save space on the links bar.

So you can't just create a shortcut to an exe file like you can in IE?

Create a link with a url like this one:
file:///C:/Program%20Files/FTP%20Commander/ftpcomm.exe

(that's my ftp program)

The "%20" is a space between words and isn't necessary if your files and directories are all one word.

You can also type in the path in the address bar with the .exe file at the end. And then click on the "add link" button.

When you start the program from the link, it'll give you a message like "Some files can harm your computer" with option buttons to save or open, and you just click "open". Voila, program opens.
