Detachable windows

Post by gvtexas » Wed Jan 28, 2004 4:29 pm

I love the fact that Avant allows small popups, such as the typical assistant popup on some forums. In IE I can move this small window outside the browser frame, so I can position it on the desktop apart from the browser.

In Avant, the small popup stays inside the browser frame and won't let me float it outside. Is this doable via a setting in Avant?

If not, please add as a feature request! : 8)
Cheers,
Gary

amen-- detachable windows are important!

Post by urbnjckdc » Fri Jan 30, 2004 12:07 am

yes, please enable detachable windows. I've occasionally seen a window detach somehow (perhaps due to a different kind of java scripting that launched it) and I would love to be able to keep a few windows open (no matter how they were launched) on my desktop, away from the main AB window.

Thanks -- great browser!

I visit some photo sites who display enlarged photos in popups. Unfortunately, I have to close AB and open IE (yuck...) when going to these sites because of the non-detachable popups. I can only drag the popup so far and much of the popup is cut off because it's contained between the three rows of toolbars at the top and the tabs/info bar at the bottom. I can turn all these off I suppose, but those are what makes AB a better choice.

Maximizing the popups does nothing since they're coded to not display scrollbars (poor foresight on the site's part, but...).

I post this not to continue to whine that we don't yet have detachable pops, but to record a simple workaround for this. If you encounter this issue, you can quickly hit F11 to go full screen, click and view the popup, then F11 to return to the normal, over-loaded toolbar browser we all love... \:D/
Cheers,
Gary

Drag tab out of the main window for new window (tear-off)

Post by ualbert » Fri Jun 10, 2005 4:10 am

Opera has a feature like this and it's really slick. You're in your tabbed browser with a bunch of web pages opened in different tabs. You want to open one of the current pages in a new window, OUTSIDE OF THE MAIN BROWSER WINDOW. You click and drag the tab you want off, next to the main browser window and you now have them side by side.

I call this "tear-off tabs". When it is in this mode, Opera does something really nice and that is they hide most of the browser chrome (button bars, etc). This maximizes the real estate for the comparison task, since you already have the main browser window already opend probably to a fairly good size.

To complement this feature Avant should also provide a shortcut to do the same function, for example Ctrl+clicking a link should open a page in a new window.

I think that this would be a good idea too.

Seeing that the new beta version can open another instance of itself, I
see no reason why Anderson can not place another option in the tabs context menu (either Move to New Avant Browser, or Open In New Avant Browser)

Horn, isn't this the same as the detachable window request? Would it be better to merge this there?

Floating windows

Post by samw5 » Fri Apr 07, 2006 5:28 pm

Not sure how much sense that makes but I figured it would be nice to be able to have floating windows so you can move the tabbed window out of the Avant browser main window.

I'm asking that cause I have a dual monitor setup and sometimes it would be nice to be able to drag a particular tab on the second monitor (without having to pan Avant).

Anyways, figured it would post here.

Keep up with the amazing work!!!

Websites outside Avant

Post by Neok » Tue May 16, 2006 6:10 pm

I've got a dual monitor setup, but because of several reasons, I don't maximize programms in the two screens, but always in just one of them.

But now I have the problem with Avant, that when I want to move one webpage to the other monitor I have to maximize avant first to two monitors (which I don't want).

So could it be possible to build a feature in Avant to drag a website outside the main Avant screen? Or maybe I'm doing something wrong and this should already be possible?

//edit:
As example: you can move the setup screen outside the main Avant screen, but you can't move a webpage like that outside Avant or it will partly disappear and won't be movable.

I agree wholeheartedly that this is a MOST desirable feature. I would use it a lot, so the sooner it could be implemented the better!

This is in effect what I requested a good few months ago, namely, the ability to right-click on a tab and select "Open in New Avant Browser".

The ability to have a tear-off action sounds nice too.

Picture Images

Post by p_amour » Sat Dec 23, 2006 8:43 pm

My problems is i usually scope models over the internet. there is certain site now that whenever you clik on a image in IE there is a pop window where the image shows up bigger.
Now when am using my favorite browser Avant and click on the image a new tab pops up, but runs on the inside of the web browser. so half of the images are cut off by the tab bar and/or the status bar, and on top is block by the tool bars. There is no scroll bar that comes up so you can scrool down and view the rest of image either.
Does Avant have a solution for this?
Maybe you guys can do like IE and have an external pop-up window with no kind off bars just the image? i really hate IE it crashes to much

Thread merged with official request thread. Sara :D

Hello,

A solution in the meantime, before further development maybe, would simply be to enable the "Open in new Avant Browser" option in the "Right Click Menu" category.

The "further development" that would undoubtedly satisfy many of the users who posted comments above, would be for the "Open in new Avant Browser" option to also be available when you right click a tab and not only when you right click a link...

Yes, Walky, I agree entirely. That would I hope not be too expensive to achieve in terms of Anderson's development time, therefore more likely to happen -- and the sooner the better, of course, as it would be very handy indeed!

I second this notion,
all in favor remain seated! =D>

I would love to see avant become more dual monitor friendly.

Opening a second avant is great,
but in these drag and drop days there is a lot missing.

Like detachable through drag and drop
then you have the right click option

I would prefer that a second avant is opened if a window
is detached. So that it would also tab windows.
Opera do not currently do this.

what would be great is a drag and drop system
between two avant! [-o<

:ugeek: keep up the great work!

Yes, that sounds great! But not everyone has two monitors, so instead of making the whole browser like that, it might be better just to make a plug-in with that feature.

true, but everything would be true for a one monitor system as well.

say you are running 1920x1200,
and would like two browsers next to each other.

detachable windows do not need two monitors to be practical.

like you could detach a small windows, with for ex. updated game score,
and make it on top of all windows.

drag and drop require no option, and should be standard avant feature -
no need to put that in a plug-in.

Ah, I see what you mean. I just thought it would work better with two monitors, because a lot of people only have one 15-19 in. monitor, and a max resolution of 1200X800. This is my case, so it wouldn't really work well for me.

I'd like to see a right click on tab > detach tab feature.

Multiple monitor user here, and the ability to drag and drop tabs between two instances of Avant Browser is something I have wanted to see for a long time! Just wanted to add my support for this request.

Google Chrome has this setup already, which is pretty cool, but Avant is still a better browser IMO :D.
