Support for Unicode domain names.

Post by sulpherdragon » Thu Dec 13, 2012 4:55 pm

Because the HTTP protocol was originally designed with ASCII in mind, Unicode must be encoded into an ascii-friendly format for use in URLs. This is fairly new and is known as "Punycode" encoding/decoding.

Avant does not support this properly.

For example, if you copy and paste this into your address bar:
http://www.xn--ixadahbbkgke5djpgxb1al0bfgtp0b.gr

If you are using chrome engine, you will see the site and the url will remain unchanged:
http://www.xn--ixadahbbkgke5djpgxb1al0bfgtp0b.gr

However if you are using firefox, the site is displayed and the domain is correctly decoded from punycode to say:
http://www.ίδρυματεχνολογίασέρευνασ.gr
The website works in this instance, but you cannot save it to bookmarks etc.

If you try this with the IE9 Engine the site will work but the domain is incorrectly decoded as:
http://www.?d??µate???????as??e??as.gr/
The website works in this instance, but you cannot copy and paste a url to anyone, or save it to bookmarks etc.

However, paste this into the address bar directly with ANY rendering engine on, and it fails:
http://www.ίδρυματεχνολογίασέρευνασ.gr

Saving this to a bookmark/autofill/alias is also broken.

Please consider adding proper unicode support for websites.
Thank you!

Confirmed.
Seems it opens ok by dragging and dropping the unicode url to a new tab.

Please provide the following information before reporting problems:
Avant Version; System(also point out it is a 32 or 64-bit OS);IE; Memory Size; CPU Speed;
Optional: Firewall; Graphics Card

For the problems hard to replay, could you add me into your MSN or Skype list if you use either of them? The advantage is that you can let us know the situation in the first place by making some screenshots, sharing your screen or explaining the specific problems more clearly when they happen.

Yes, that seems to work for me using the Chrome engine. However I couldn't get that to work with the FF or IE engines.
