7April2012

Greetings.

I hope AvB will continue to publish a download for the DUAL core USB version.
I would like (for now anyway) to continue using the DUAL core USB version.
Combining IE with Gecko (or Chrome) is good, because
IE can do some things that neither Gecko nor Chrome can do;
e.g., connect to windows.update ...
I see no real value in being able to run all three under one GUI ...
What will happen if I do not copy into use the "webkit" directory
along with the other Build 168 items?

The forum main page is (as of now) touting Build 167 instead of 168.

I haven't tested the USB version, but I have experimented to see what happens if you remove the gecko folder or the webkit folder from the installed version. In either case, Avant operates just fine. As a matter of fact, all references to the engine whose folder you remove disappear from the menus, such that Avant tri-core with either engine's folder removed truly becomes a dual-core browser. Try it yourself.

I also would like a dual core version option. I don't use or want chrome so its a waste of time and bandwidth that I must dl those components each time I update AB

When the tri-core Avant installation is complete, the gecko folder is around 60 MB, and the webkit folder is around 80 MB. I don't know how much space these two take up while compressed in the installer, but it's possible that quite a bit of the size difference between the IE-only installer (3.5 MB) and the tri-core installer (40.9 MB) might be attributable to files that are needed to make Avant a multi-engine browser even if there are only two engines. Also, don't forget that the IE-only version uses the trident engine built into Windows, so the trident engine isn't packaged separately and included in the download.

The reason I'm bringing this up is that a third and fourth flavor of Avant (there'd have to be one for IE+Chrome and one for IE+Gecko to satisfy everyone) would require a lot more work on Anderson's part. Every time he'd release an update to the Avant core files, he'd have to apply it to four versions, and even an update that only affects IE and/or one of the other two engines would require that three of the versions be updated and released. This could cause a lot of problems and could make it take a lot longer for Anderson to get updates ready for release.

Interesting/Good to hear/know, but
I am still curious to hear/know what AvB dev might have to say on the topic ...

If you check the avant.exe executable, you will see that it is the same for all releases.
The application checks for the Gecko/Webkit folder and its appropriate contents.
Depending on the result, Avant will then enable the relevant features for the engine.
Therefore, you can happily delete the Gecko/Webkit folder in order to reduce the footprint.

Perhaps instead of different versions have just one small installer that asks if we want FF and/or Chrome engine support. Then the installer could dl any additional needed files on the fly.

I agree too. I just don't have any idea how much work it would take to implement it and if Anderson has the bandwidth for something like that on top of upgrades and bug fixes.

I believe this request will be considered.

I just copied ß169 (without webkit) into use.
AvB 169 tells me I have no MFF extensions installed - which is rubbish.
I have never had this problem before, so I reverted to ß28 ...

It seems that AvB ß169 also changed my "Standard Search - Web"
custom entry back to AvantFind ...
I hope that won't happen with every subsequent update ...

custom entry to "browser:home" ...
I hope that won't happen with every subsequent update ...

Are there other custom settings I might have made
that AvB 169 might have wiped out?

It won't happen again. Just the developer has rewritten some part of the program. It won't happen in next upgrade.

Maybe AvB could publish the USB version in three separate zip files:
1) AvB (IE only)
2) Gecko
3) Webkit

One USB version is enough I think. The webkit and gecko engine can be delete separately. If you want IE engine only, you can delete both webkit and gecko folder.

One of the concerns mentioned earlier in this thread is the size of the download, and while you're correct that the webkit and gecko folders can be deleted after installation, the download size would remain quite large with a single USB version.

The above means items 2 & 3 are WITHOUT AvB, so the AvB core would not be redundant.
