Multithread Avant

Post by Psykocyber » Fri Sep 05, 2008 12:51 pm

A big job, but multithreading Avant/Orca would hopefully remove the annoyance of having the entire browser to stall, just because one tab is using a lot of processing power.

Watching a video in one tab while surfing in another is impossible due to constant stalls.

Multithreading the tabs is the single greatest feature that could be added to Avant Browser. I don't care about any other requested feature. Multithreading is the only feature I want. I would even offer my multithreaded programming skills if needed just to get this feature into my favorite browser.

As the threads creator is it not surprising that I 100% agree. This is the only thing that keeps Avant from being a completely modern browser (well, that and a simpler GUI).

Maybe V12?

How is the GUI not simple enough?

Being as modular as it is, you can make it as simple or sophisticated as you want. One thing I really like about Avant is being able to move the menus up into the title bar to save space.

But +1 for multithreading. Something needs to save Avant as the memory leaks are really the main thing hurting it right now for me.

I'm not saying that I don’t like all the customization Avant gives us. In fact I love it.
I'm just saying that every major browser out there all have a lot more simple GUI than Avant.

Of course...
I'm not saying that I dont like Avants current form. I'm just saying that Avants many-button standard setting is a thing of the past.

OK, enough about that. Let's get back on topic.

Multithreading is really the only important feature that Avant Browser lacks. Other browsers already have multithreading, including IE8 beta. The lack of multithreading is tempting me to switch browsers. The only thing holding me back is the Online Storage feature, which other browsers lack.

Sorry but I'll have to disagree. Customization is one of the things that makes Avant so great. It's also one of the major reasons why Chrome hasn't taken off if you go look at polls, reports, etc. It takes me less than 20 seconds to strip Avant down to the way you've shown in that pic and I only have to do it once. I really think it's just a matter of preference.

Please stick to topic!
And also, please read what I'm saying! I like Avants options! I'm just saying that all major browser have very few buttons.
And enough OT!

Ok, people.. Things can get off-topic alittle in the course of a conversation. No harm done..

While yes I know that alot of the major browsers have few buttons. But just because Avant has them and can be turned off doesn't make Avant any different then the ones that ONLY have those few buttons.

But yes to comment on the multithreading. There has not been any talk as far as I know about adding multithreading. But I for one would love it as well if it was implemented.

The lack of multithreading is causing some people to think that Avant Browser has a bug that makes it freeze. But the true reason why Avant Browser was not responding was that it doesn't multithread. One CPU-hogging site on one tab can cause the entire browser to become non-responsive. You won't even be able to access the menus at that point until the CPU-hogging website completely loads. So multithreading is not merely a feature that needs to be added, it is also a virtual bug fix that would satisfy these browser freezing complaints and prevent future ones.

Multi-threading don't necessarily solves freezing problems, and may add it's own bugs and freezing issues.

Hmm
What do you mean? Just tried to open about 7 "loading" tabs and watch a video in Youtube and it worked fine.

Whilst Avant sits there waiting for a page to complete loading, it also stalls everything else you are trying to do with your computer, specifically anything involving network transfers. This means it takes an age to save a file to the server, for example, and it makes streaming multimedia content run like a sack of ****. Especially if it's a video. 10 seconds of smooth streaming ... stutter .. hiccup ... 10 seconds wait ... resume playback ... stutter ... hiccup .. you catch my drift

9.99 times out of 10 problems with video stream buffering is not Avant's fault. It has alot of factors, your computers hardware, your internet connection, traffic on that particular site..etc..

I disagree. For every instance I have had an issue with movie buffering or streams, I have been able to play the stream without issue in IE7 or FF.

These are not isolated cases either...

Exaclty. Avant fails where IE succeeds.
In IE you can watch video while loading pages in the background, but not in Avant. And that is not even a threading problem. Avant stalls on many pages where no other browser have a problem.
