I agree - in fact I think there ought to be buttons for every menu function and the option to show/hide the main menu (I have said this elsewhere - but I couldn't resist the opportunity to repeat myself)
to thine ownself ...

While we're on the subject, I'll repeat the old call for the "open recent" function to open its own tab rather than use the current.

I got used to click shift... I'd rather keep the functionality to be able to open it in the same window, it's sometimes useful if I don't really care about the current tab.

Same here. Although I have a habit of using Open In New Window from the context menu with menu items rather than Shift-Click. I was really pleased to find the Open Recent menu has a context menu for its items :)

A little off-subject, but I find the Open Recent menu often loads slow because it loads each favicon in series, rather than showing all of the items with the default favicon, then replacing the favicons as they load (like IE does). This is the same with the Favourites menu, but the Open Recent menu tends to change a lot during a browsing session, thus loads slowly almost every time.

While I never encountered that problem in the recents page list, I definitely notice a quite important hangup when opening the favorites menu, and its most likely due to that.

I didn't notice that before! Excellent! (I can't use shift - click on Tablet PC.)

Request officially withdrawn. Thanks, Wilson!
