Avant for Linux

Postby Linux_Uzer » Sun Apr 13, 2003 8:21 pm

Although I know Avant is a Win32 app, I'd like to see a Linux version. I can't really help. I use a dual boot and I'd love to have Avant in both Windows and Linux. I'll keep an eye out for it.

It's based on IE so that's impossible.

Actually, no it's not. All you'd need is something along the lines of Wine (see http://www.winehq.com) running and possibly, a stand-alone copy of IE's core file's.

That's right. I have IE running in Linux but I can't get Avant to run. That is, I can't get it to run yet. I will eventually get Avant to run in Linux.

if they make avant browser for linux then this will cause problems

there will not be as many updates for avant browser because the creator will be busy with working on 2 programs instead of 1

she will be too preoccupied to offer adequate updates

There is a pretty good unrealized demand for a native Linux version of avant browser. Currently the only well known option out there for Linux users is Mozilla Firefox. It's a nice program, however, not all websites are agreeable with it. I can see more and more people switching over to Linux simply for the fact it's stable and secure, unlike windows which is a nightmare. As more and more people put more of their information on the net, and the more they realize what a piece of crap windows is, the more people will switch to Linux. There are distributions of Linux (such as Mepis) that are quite easy to use and learn. I am sure if there were an avantbrowser for Linux, it would easily overtake Firefox. If you build it, people will use it.

I agree with inuyasha320
I'm using Linux sometime and also would like to see Avant Browser for Linux BUT I won't support this request

Because then Anderson (The only 1 Avant Browser's author & developer) will also have to release a version for Linux and test & debug it on Linux

And it will take longer for him to release updates/new versions

there are windows emulators for linux are there not?

if so the windows version of avant with its windows Ie could be run on linux. this would make it so Anderson only has to work on one version of avant also

No. If I remeber correctly, SweetLou tried this and couldn't get it to work. It is a lot harder than one might think because even if you could get both installed, Avant wouldn't be able to call the needed components when it needs to becasue things are totally different.

Well, I never used a Windows emulator. I use WINE (which is an acronym for "Wine Is Not an Emulator"). I do have IE running in Linux, but I can't get Avant to run. I was going to look into it, but never did. Too much other stuff I was doing.

To resurrect this old thread, I would like to run Avant in Ubuntu also. I can run it in my Xp virtual machine though, but that's not the same :D I'm going to try again with wine or crossover or whatever again..

I do not see Avant Browser for Linux happening, ever... I do however see Orca for Linux a slight possibility, if Anderson wrote the program in C++ and has a compiler capable of cross-platform compilation. however, I believe it is programmed in Delphi which is only capable of compiling Win32 apps (afaik).

Well, if we cant have a way to run it in Linux, is there any way to export our Bookmarks and Autofills (from online profile), and use them elsewhere? I have dozens of autofills :(

Thanks

no to the autofills, but yes to the bookmarks. you can find the option under file > export bookmarks.

This is not what you are looking for exactly, but a decent workaround. You could install the Windows version of Firefox with Wine in Linux and install the IE tab extension. I think that would work, but I have not tried it. I dual boot so rather than messing around too much in things that I can break and not install in the first place, I just reboot.

What about Orca for Linux ?

That wouldn't work becaues the IE Tab extension uses the IE rendering engine installed on your computer. It doesn't contain the rendering engine in any way in it's own code.
