Yahoo toolbar? Ive read everything..

Post by ataylor20 » Wed Aug 04, 2004 7:15 pm

using: Avant 9.02 build 101

Okay for the 1 millionth time. I know everyone is asking this question.

"How do I get the yahoo toolbar to work with avant?" but I mainly want the bookmarks.

From what I can tell everyone gets the toolbar to work because the use an old version of its dll files. I have serached everyone on the net and cant find and old file!

My computer is new so I dont have any previous versions to refernce back to.

Maybe theres another way to get this to work.

HELP please..

Thanks,
AT

People have found this tool as a good alternative to yahoo's bookmark feature.

I don't think theres a way to get the yahoo toolbar to work in the latest Avant build. Even if you had the old dll, I believe it would only work in an old Avant unfortunatly. :(

Hi ataylor20 this is the best site to find older versions of Avant. Maybe one of those will work for you.

He doesn't have the old dll's for the yahoo toolbar though. The new toolbar won't work in any AB version...

No Yahoo Compatability no Avant Browser.

Post by Roger Huston » Fri Aug 13, 2004 5:12 pm

Well, I really liked Avant Browser, but since the Author turned off the ability for it to work with Yahoo Companion, I can't use it.

For me it is more imoportant for me to be able to access my bookmarks from home, office and the road, than it is to use Avant Browser. There are plenty of other alternatives out there.

The worst part for me was trying to uninstall Avant Browser. While the program was gone, all regular IE defaults were gone. I spent a couple of days trying to work around it, then my computer crashed and I had to re-OS the box.

What I didn't like about what the Author did, is he is actively blocking Yahoo Companion. Yes, I understand some people had problesm with it, but I was not one of them. It always worked for me and would probably work to this day had it not been for the active blocking of YC.

I check back from time to time to see if he fixed this problem, I know, I know, he says it is Yahoo's problem, but in the end it works fine with IE, which Avant is based.

This has nothing to do with it. The reason most toolbars don't work in Avant is because the toolbars were designed to work on IE's interface. Avant's is much different and has to be change (and sometimes the 3rd party toolbar also) to be compatible.

It worked for some people up until the point that YC was upgraded--then it was a bust! It's not that the author is actively "blocking" Yahoo--he simply hasn't been able to get them to work together since YC's upgrade. With the arrangement he made with Yahoo for the AvantFind search engine we all love so much, don't you think they'd have wanted YC as part of the package too? If he can ever sort out the compatibility issues it might come back.

Quite frankly, I think we have enough YaHoo stuff now--I'd rather not see any more!

Its nice that you don't use the buttons off the YC bar and the bookmarks, but there are a lot of us that still do and frankly I miss being able to upgrade past 9.01 106. There is a lot of neat stuff in the newer version that many of us would love to use, but won't get a chance to unless we can get YC to work with it.

would love to have the yahoo toolbar as well BUT if the bookmarks is all you really need !!! there is a way to still use them
from your My Yahoo Page
i know the toolbar is faster but this is way you can still get to bookmarks when not at your pc

if you have not added the bookmarks to your My Yahoo ,do the following
go to your " My Yahoo " page

either do this on your Main page or set up new page

click - add content
click -Yahoo! Services
add - bookmarks
on page you saved bookmarks to click edit
then click import

will import all bookmarks you have ....
to your yahoo page

this is the last version that yahoo toolbar works with....

http://avant.it-mate.co.uk/dl/09_Series ... 01_106.exe

both the old and new yahoo toolbar shows up with it.. but for me my hole computer get frozen when i show the toolbar... well not totally frozen cause i'm still able to end task in task manager.

but you was askin for the old version of yahoo companion... you can get an earlier copy if you download the yahoo essentials.
get it at essentials.yahoo.com. that toolbar is version 5.3.12.0 and the version as of now if you visit toolbar.yahoo.com is 5.5.7.0.
if it works properly for you.. then i'm happy for u. cause me... well had to stop using avant cause of that issue. as u said... need my bookmarks.

hpope this helps you out a bit.
