You won't have problems as;

1. You've got ISM

which means

2. You're also most likely running 2000/XP or Server 2003

Whereas, I'm running 98SE, which does not come with ISM as ISM is for Windows 2000 and above systems that are running a web server.

advantfind as 404

Post by fishthecat » Wed Jul 07, 2004 6:21 pm

I'd like to add my name to the list of people who find this 404 replacement page a pain, unnecessary and annoying. It's ugly, but worst of all it's forced upon me.

I've blocked avantfind.com on my router which blocks the images in the 404 page, so hopefully that'll stop avantfind.com getting any more hits from me. But I'd really, really appreciate help getting rid of this or changing it to a page of my choosing.
Is there a way to fiddle with the windows HOST file to block calls to avantfind.com rather than using my router?

For goodness sake, can we please stop all these stealth 'features'. This and the disabling of "enter goes to http://<url>" are really annoying.

Open up Notepad and locate the HOSTS (no extension) file (normally located in \Windows\) and add the following entry;

127.0.0.1 avantfind.com

_should_ stop the page coming up in future.

unfortunately, it doesn't. mapping avantfind.com to localhost in the hosts file only manages to block the images and break the links on the 404 page. the page itself still renders...

In that case, it's likely that the Avantfind page is written/embedded into the Avant iexplore.exe file itself in which case, there's nothing we can do to help unfortunately :(

The page is coded in avant, just like IE's error pages are. Putting the site in the hosts file does everything that's needed in terms of "privacy" (no packets can exit since they are all rerouted to localhost) and of "speed" (contacting localhost is almost instantaneous); what remains is just an aesthetic problem, which I'm afraid can only be solved by patching the binaries, and of course this should be done on every update... I did something similar with IE's 404 since, after putting some sites in the hosts file, I got several error messages all around a page (coming from pictures that were blocked at the hosts level and not by avant): since these were too distracting, I wanted a completely blank 404 page, which I obtained by removing the standard 404 HTML from IE's binaries (but the on the next upgrade I'll have to do it again); luckily, the error pages are stored plain-text in the binaries, so it was relatively easy...

That is reason enough to ditch an otherwise great browser.

I tried AB about a year ago. Back then it was continuously sucking an ever-increasing amount of RAM, then crashing constantly.

I spend an obscene amount of time on the Internet, so obnoxious crap like this 404 page really becomes the FATAL FLAW.

And I only tried this for a day...

http://avant.it-mate.co.uk/

Go to the above site.......there is an archive in the Downloads section of older versions of Avant..............download the 9.02 v033. This is the last release version without the "problem" you speak of.

Wheww!

I'm glad I gave it a chance this time, because I'm really not ever going back to Internet Exploder, and FireFox Opera are also horribly annoying.

Thanks, Pip :D

I must say that with my configuration, the "Avantfind" 404 and the standard IE 404 bear no differences: apart from "philosophical" considerations, having avantfind.com rerouted to localhost and having Avant's picture blocker filter images from avantfind.com results in a completely local page that almost says "Page not found", even though you get some nice link columns (all unavailable, since everything there points to 127.0.0.1) and you don't get image placeholders since they are filtered out.

As I said in my previous post, there are neither privacy concerns nor speed limitations, just a different appearance. And the current is a better implementation, since it leaves the original URL in the address bar, allowing to simply refresh the page to see if it has become available, whereas the previous releases changed the URL to avantfind, making a refresh impossible. Also, if the site you are visiting implements custom 404 error pages, these remain available (I have just checked): the "Avantfind" 404 is just a direct replacement for IE's, nothing else. If the implementation remains the same I see no problems in keeping it, and somebody might even find useful to have a search in the case of a 404 error, and remove avantfind from the hosts file...

The above applies to the latest SU of build 9.02.033.

i used avant now for more than one year.

the last time this avantfind came up it was easy to stop it using the hostfile. and now hardcoded ?

i really do not want to know what other "surprises" are included in the silent update.

control panel - uninstall - goodbye

to sad this real great browser starts as a lot of other f***ing software.

It doesn't bother me at all. Just pretend it is your custom 404 page.

You cannot block the new page with the hosts file.

I've been an Avant user for a long time and have resisted even trying new browsers, but when I saw this 404 redirect for the 2nd time I'm now contemplating trying something else. Keep in mind I'm very stubborn and don't just change on a whim, so I can guarantee you there's definitely a larger group of people out there ticked off by this that don't post here.

Yes the programmers can do what they wish with their program, but I will also exercise my ability to take my business elsewhere. That's one less download of the browser which will result in less interest from advertisers. The programmers might have made an extra buck in the short term but what are the opportunity costs? I'll say it's thousands of users worldwide, which will only hurt them in the long run and increase downloads of the competition's browsers.
