Can't completely clear history

Post by jbrown » Thu May 29, 2003 1:16 pm

I'm having a minor problem with Avant Browser. I can't seem to clear one particular address from the history. As soon as I type "w" it auto-completes the address and it's always there. It's been in there (somewhere) for weeks now. I have cleared everything repeatedly to get rid of it. I have searched the registry for the string and can't find it anywhere. Does anyone else experience this? How many places and ways can a url be stored?

That's been mentioned here: http://forum.avantbrowser.com/YaBB.cgi? ... 45;start=5

I am not aware of any fixes in the code.  But I have had sucess in setting the "days to keep pages in history" to 0 a day and clear history a few times.

Yes, I too have this problem. I also searched the registry without success and searched my entire drive without success. So it has been noted, but I have no idea how to fix it yet, unfortunately. For me, the address is a typo, and it drives me nuts with autocomplete.

Thanks Tom, I'll try your method and see what happens.

the answer is...

find index.dat on your computer and delete it. that's basically the main way to do it. then again, you actually can't delete it. So what I do is use a program such as Tracks Eraser which basically rewrites the whole index.dat to blank characters. Index.dat basically stores the informatino you want to delete :)

Which index.dat? cookies-index.dat - UserData-index.dat, or temporary internet files -index.dat?  ???

temp files index.dat. YOu can't actually delete it so you will need a 3 rd party program like tracks eraser to deal with the file.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with the problem. I saw that other post that Tom mentioned the other day. Since there was no fix, I thought I would mention it again.

Anyways, I tried setting my history to 0 days and cleared it a bunch of times. No luck. Then I looked through index.dat. Though there are some urls in there, none are the problem one. As it turns out, you can delete that file! Unless of course it was the wrong one. I'm referring to index.dat in \WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\. Is that the right place?

The stupid url string has to be stored somewhere. Does anyone know where Avant Browser reads that info from? Internet Explorer isn't doing it, so it must be an AB unique bug.

I would sugest trying batigolaso's route first then since my way failed to work.

There are a lot of track eraser programs out there can can wipe/edit out the stored history files.

Something like that might be worthwile integrating into the browser.. how often have you flubbed a URL.. now for months you have it auto completing instead of what you really want.

jbbrown: if it's the index.dat file i'm thiniking of (the one that stores the crucial info),t hen you certainly can't delete it. Trust me, anderson and I have looked athat file many times trying to solve this problem. That file should ahve the url, and it should be in the registry as well. I suggest downloading that program I mentioend to get rid of the link if you really need to get rid of it. It's just a work around, but it will have to do for now...

clear index.dat!

Post by crom » Sat May 31, 2003 4:08 am

Another way to get rid of a big index.dat file is using you favorite compressing tool...

Such as WinRAR or PowerArchiver.
With that, browse your hd till you find the index.dat

Then call TaskManager (Ctrl+Alt+Canc) and terminate the process "explorer.exe".

Then switch back to (for example) PowerArchiver, and delete index.dat! it WILL be deleted! ;)
As for me, I usually delete the entire
\Temporary Internet Files
dir, instead of just getting rid of index.dat

Last thing: switch back to task manager, and start again "explorer.exe".

DONE! Now you have a clear index.dat file (its least dimension is 32K if I'm not mistaken), without having to reboot the PC!

;D

you are DEFINITELY not using windows xp...you do ctrl-alt-del to explorer and you're done for...you have to restart. hehehe. while you're at it, just delete from dos :), or download a simple free program to do it for you.

I'm DEFINITIVELY using WinXP!! (I'm a really power user with this OS, I tried..the untriable! :) )
So you're completely wrong, mate!!!  8)
You don't have to restart anything, save explorer.exe!

Just try the procedure I've written, and you'll see! ;)
It works 100%!

Okay, I downloaded and ran a tracks eraser program. That took care of the problem url. It makes me wonder what AB does differently than IE that would cause a the bug. AB supposedly use IE, but just in a better way right...? So why would one dig out the url and the other wouldn't?

Before I ran the eraser program, I I was going through all of the 'Clear Records' options. I noticed that AB was having some serious trouble. It was unable to clear typed urls at all. No matter what I did, all typed urls stayed. What else is it NOT deleting? Anyay, after running the eraser, AB can now mysteriously delete typed urls again.

Thanks to everyone for the help and suggestions. By the way, are there any free eraser programs? I'm using  AbsoluteShield Internet Eraser and it expires in 15 days.
