Is there a way to remove the LINKS folder from the favorites drop-down menu? I never use it but cannot seem to get rid of it because it's not listed when you go to organize favorites.

Thanks
DAVID

I think you can delete it from the sidebar. Get to that by clicking the favourites button in the standard buttons bar. Then right click on the Links folder and dselect delete.

One thing though is that IE will recreate the Links folder.

To Remove Links folder from Favorites:
  1. Start the Registry Editor (Start/Run/Regedit)
  2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar
  3. Set the String value of LinksFolderName to equal a blank string
  4. Exit the Registry Editor
  5. Delete the Links folder from the Favorites
  6. The next time you start Internet Explorer the Links folder will not be recreated

Don't think that's possible.

this might be something of interest... I've actually renamed the registry for "Links" to nothing and it still shows and works in AB. however its disappeared in IE. so now my Links toolbar within IE is just showing all my Favourites. go figure!!

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "not to show up but still be able to use it"!

in windows, I set the links folder properties to "hidden," and doesn't show up in my favorites menu in windows, and it's not in the "organize favorites" screen in AB, but it's still listed on the left pane when I enable View > Favorites.

I've restarted AB.

what gives?

Avant does show hidden folders in its menus. I'm pretty sure that this has been brought up before, but it's nothing you're doing wrong.

I warned you's about swearing @ me

nah, the links folder will be recreated by windows. there's a microsoft kb article that states "the links folder is a permantent part of windows and cannot be deleted. but it can be hidden." or something to that effect.

and then the article goes on to descibe how to hide it. which I've done.

so to repeat my problem:

--on my system, the "links" folder is hidden in windows
--it's not shown in the "favorites" menu in IE
--it's not shown in the "favorites" menu under START
--it does not appear when I use the "organize" function in AB.

but it is still listed in the "favorites" pane on the left side of the AB screen.

is this a bug? or a feature? I can blame MS up and down for creating a folder that refuses to die, but why does AB continue to display it when it's not visible anywhere else on my machine?

It can be deleted. It takes a registry hack. I think there are some posts on this forum on how to do it. I will see if I can find one.

Open your registry and find the key below.

Set the value of "LinksFolderName" to equal a blank string. Open IE and delete the Links folder from the Favorites menu.

The next time you start Internet Explorer the Links folder will not be recreated.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar

An easier way is to use TweakUI
For XP
Non XP

great! thanks for this tip--

but now, does anyone know if this trick will get rid of the folder in the favorites pane in AB?

See my previous post. Of course it will. This is what I do. I use TweakUI to do it but I have done it through the registry before. Basically, TweakUI will do the registry thing for you, so you don't have to do it manually.

I don't use the sidebar for favourites. I just put all my most frequently used folders in the links folder and enable the links bar.
