Orca Portable

Post by kudos » Mon Jan 12, 2009 12:06 pm

This post is outdated. Please go to the new post for more recent information.

Steps to create a portable version of Orca Browser:

Extract contents of the setup file to a folder (ie C:\ORCA) - I recommend using the 7-zip file manager
Move all of the folders within $_OUTDIR to the main Orca folder
Create an empty folder named .default (don't forget the dot at the front!)

You should end up with a structure like this:

Code: Select all

Directory of C:\Orca

<DIR> .
<DIR> ..
<DIR> .default
<DIR> chrome
<DIR> components
<DIR> defaults
<DIR> dictionaries
<DIR> extensions
<DIR> greprefs
<DIR> Lang
<DIR> modules
<DIR> plugins
<DIR> res
<DIR> searchplugins
        11,776 AccessibleMarshal.dll
         2,035 application.ini
         1,561 blocklist.xml
           119 browserconfig.properties
       124,235 default.skn
           115 dependentlibs.list
           478 freebl3.chk
       233,472 freebl3.dll
        23,040 IA2Marshal.dll
       614,400 js3250.dll
         1,058 kpp.wav
        31,393 LICENSE
       704,512 mozcrt19.dll

     9,003,008 xul.dll
              35 File(s) 14,947,192 bytes
              14 Dir(s)
You now have a portable version of Orca that you can run from a USB drive, shared folder, etc.

There is only one additional thing to do - the file mozx.dll needs to be registered on the computer running Orca. This is simply done by entering the following command:

Code: Select all

regsvr32 mozx.dll
You could create to batch file to automate this:

Code: Select all

regsvr32 /s mozx.dll
orca.exe
regsvr32 /u /s mozx.dll
The only problem is that you may need admin rights on the computer in order to register the file. If anyone has any workaround then please let me know.

DID YOU KNOW that Avant and Orca share the same configuration file format? You could use all of your Avant settings, bookmarks, etc in Orca just by copying the .default folder from Avant to Orca! Better still, if you use both browsers regularly (as I do) then you could merge the Avant and Orca folders into one and use the same configuration between browsers (just decide which res\logo.jpg splash image that you would like to see).

Hope this helps anyone. Thanks to Anderson for his consistency between browsers.

Thanks guys.

One more thing about Orca is where it places its cached / temporary files. They get stored in .default\mozdata\

So you have to be careful when running from a USB stick as it may quickly eat up your free space.

You can check this for yourself by typing about:cache in the address bar.

In Firefox you can set the cache folder by changing a setting in either about:cache or the prefs.js file.

The setting name is browser.cache.disk.parent_directory and the value could be set to something like "C:\\ORCA\\CACHE" - I have tried this but Orca refuses to accept it. I think that we may need some feedback from Anderson on this too.

A download link for Orca Browser Portable:

Orca Browser Portable 1.1rc3

It's a self extracting 7z file just like the Avant one.

I tried adding it to the Wiki, but the page it locked and non-editable.

Thanks!

Looks like this is unchangeable in the portable version - standard version works just fine.

Looks like this was fixed in 1.1 RC3 and I am now able to store the cache my defined temp folder.
The setting change for browser.cache.disk.parent_directory as described previously now works.
